soccer championship
The week of July 14th saw
the Clinton U 14 Boys com-
pete for the North Huron
Championship. The local
squad entered the playoffs as
the top ranked team after a
9-1 regular season and con-
tinued that on through an
undefeated run to the cham-
pionship outscoring their
competition 38-5.
Clinton began the tourna-
ment with a lopsided 13-1 vic-
tory against Lucknow. Up next
was the only team to defeat
them in the regular season
their rivals to the east Seaforth.
As expected this was a hard
fought match with Clinton get-
ting a measure of revenge cour-
tesy of a 4-1 victory. In the last
round robin game versus St
Columban 2, a bye to the semis
was hanging in the balance. In
true Clinton fashion they
brought their "A' game claim-
ing an 8-0 victory. With a day
off to rest up for their yet to be
determined competition the
boys were feeling confident.
Super Saturday was upon them
and once again they would
have to defeat a strong Seaforth
squad. It was evident from the
kickoff it was Seaforth's game
plan to play a physical game,
trying to slow down the high
octane Clinton offence. Even
though they threw everything
they had, including some body
checks and pushes at our boys,
there was no slowing down the
offensive onslaught. Clinton
stuck to a ball control game
and made thempayto the tune
of an 8-2 victory and a ticket to
the big game. With a few hours
to rest and fuel up, Clinton was
made aware that Goderich was
all that stood between then and
the big trophy. As our boys
stepped on the pitch you got a
feeling they would not be
denied. The game began with
Clinton controlling the play,
only to be denied by posts or
Goderich's keeper. Then Tuggy
took control and bent one like
Beckham in the top comer 1-0
Clinton. Goderich gave a little
pushback, Clinton bent but did
not break As coach Brad called
for him to give it a try, Caleb did
just that and gave the locals a
2-0 lead. Jonnie would volley a
cross into the net for a 3-0 lead.
The half would end that way.

Now only 40 minutes stood
between the boys and a cham-
pionship. The second half saw
Goderich answer back and
make this a game. Clinton
decided enough was enough
and Boots got a through ball
and deked the goalie out 4-1
Clinton. To put a little icing on
the cake Jonnie did some shak-
ing
haleing and baking putting the final
exclamation mark on a spec-
tacular season. Make the final
5-1 Clinton. You captured the
GOLD! What a wonderful sea-
son. You truly are champions!
