Huron Career Fair
The 2nd Annual Huron
Career Fair and Business
Trade Show 2014 is welcom-
ing back students, job seek-
ers and exhibitors at the
Knights of Columbus Hall in
Wingham on Wednesday,
October 1st from 9am until
4pm. The career fair features
interactive booths, activities,
presentations and door
prizes and is a great oppor-
tunity to meet employers
and speak with college rep-
resentatives to explore edu-
cation, career and work
possibilities.
The Huron Career Fair is
hosted by the Industry Con-
nects partnership which is
strengthening the links
between businesses, indus-
try and education to better
meet labour force needs and
tackle the skills gap. Spon-
sorship is essential to the ini-
tiative's sustainability and
we thank our silver spon-
sors; Partners in Employ-
ment and the Huron Manu-
facturing Association, as well
as North Huron, Huron
Small Business Enterprise
Centre, Lambton College,
Georgian College, Progres-
sive Turf Equipment Inc.,
Dupont Pioneer, Conestoga
Career Centre and Health -
Kick for their generous sup-
port. This initiative was
made possible with funding
by the Ministry of Training,
Colleges and Universities,
Ontario and the work of our
many partners.
The skills gap is the gap
that exists between the cur-
rent labour force and the
skill requirements (present
and future) of employers so
that they can grow and pros-
per in our region. A recent
report by the Four County
Labour Market Planning
Board identified the follow-
ing sectors as priority areas
in our region:
1. Agriculture
2. Manufacturing (includ-
ing transportation, and food
& beverage processing)
3. Healthcare and Social
Assistance
4. Construction and
Skilled Trades
5. Retail Trade and
Services
The report made recom-
mendations for employers
and businesses, educators
and community partners so
that strategies, programs and
services can better address
skills gap issues. Teachers
and guidance counsellors
have a big roll to play to
"ensure youth understand
the dynamics of the local
labour market," the report
says. Already, over 400 stu-
dents are planning on
attending.
"There are jobs in the
county that aren't being
filled due to skilled workers
not being available," says
Bluewater Economic Devel-
opment Co-ordinator Mark
Cassidy. "The key is to show-
case businesses and industry
sectors and the skills they
require as well as education
and training opportunities
that can meet these require-
ments so that job seekers
and students can choose a
career based on the local
and current workforce and
the future demand for skills:'
Forty-nine exhibitors took
part in last year's career fair
hosted by the Municipality
of Bluewater at the Zurich
arena, welcoming fourteen
bus loads of students and
many job seekers. This year,
the career fair is being
hosted by the Township of
North Huron and many of
the same exhibitors are back
as well as new exhibitors
from further north. These
include CKNX radio, Bruce
Power, Hyndman Transport,
Listowel Wingham Hospital
Alliance, Brite -Span, Com-
munity Living -Central
Huron and many others.
Training and education
exhibitors include many col-
leges, including 2 of our
sponsors: Georgian College
and Lambton College.
