Bayfield says final
goodbye to arena ice
Gerard Creces
Clinton News -Record
While it was under celebratory aus-
pices that generations gathered at the
Bayfield Arena Sunday, March 16, the
day had an underlying sadness to it as
the final day of skating.
Ever.
Bluewater Council sealed the fate of
the ice in a March 3 vote, and the com-
munity gathered for one last day of fun
at season's end. Every user group was
represented on the ice for the final day -
girls and boys hockey, figure skating,
oldtimers' hockey and public skating.
Upstairs, kids took part in mini -stick
games on the floor amid other activities.
It was a good send-off for an old
friend.
When the final buzzer sounded on the
River Rats vs. Relics game, the nets were
put away and the ice left unflooded. Last
to skate off the ice was Ron Keys, who
tried unsuccessfully to convince Blue -
water to reverse their decision on the
fate of the ice.
Let's hope with good
faith and determination
there will be ice in next
year."
— Mayor Bill Dowson
President of the Bayfield Skating
Club, Mary -Ellen Coombs, said the Bay-
field Arena Community Partners are
still not giving up on the cause.
"We're all sad that it's over. But we
wanted to make it fun for the kids," she
said following the skating clubs final
Bayfield performance.
Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson
stopped by the arena Sunday to see the
wrap up of the 2013/14 season. He had
some encouraging words on his way
out.
"Let's hope with good faith and deter-
mination there will be ice in next year:'
