Huron Health Unit has many ways for public to learn about beach safety With the hot days of summer coming, residents and visitors are starting to hit the beach. Beachgoers in Huron County have several ways to get up-to- date information on water quality. The Huron County Health Unit has a telephone hotline, web page and Twitter account to keep people informed of water conditions. There are also QR Codes on the beach signs at the 14 beaches. You can scan the code with a smart phone and it will take you to a mobile friendly web page with information on water quality. The health unit samples water at 14 Lakeshore beaches twice a week from June to the end of August. At least five water samples are collected at each beach and are sent to an Ontario Public Health Laboratory for bacterial analysis. This determines the number of E. coli colonies presentin the sample. E. coli in the water indicates the potential presence of disease causing organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. Many factors affect water quality, including recent rain- fall, winds, turbidity (water clarity), and wave action. Lab results are then posted on the website, telephone hotline and tweeted out. Bayfield Vettefest will return to the village on Fri., July 4 and Sat., July 5. Things kick off with a summer's night cruise leaving from Clan Gregor Square at 7 p.m. On Sat., July 5, things kick off with a fireman's breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be goodie bags for the first 200 Corvettes. Organizer Brian Coombs of RE/MAX Reliable Realty in Bayfield said Vettefest has become extremely popular event since it was created eight years ago. Last year, there were 251 vehicles reg- istered for the event from all over Ontario as well as some northern states. Beyond that, Coombs said it presents a fantastic opportunity to promote the village of Bayfield. "We are trying to attract people to the village," he said. Asked why the Corvette is such a popular car, Coombs said the new edi- tions are "beautifully engineered" while the classics "were really ahead of their time:' They see a good amount of both, from 1954 to 2014, he added. "Bring its generations together," he said. Coombs believes the fact Vettefest takes place in a park instead of parking lot is a bonus as well. "You can park in the shade or sun, then walk downtown and visit the inns and pubs," Coombs said. For more information on the event visit, http://www.bayfieldvettefest.com.
