Clinton News Record, 2014-06-18, Page 3Many opportunities for immigrants in rural communities Event held in Clinton to help build Indo -Canadian relationships Dave Flaherty For the News Record Organizers of a recent event in Clinton were looking to invite members of Indian -Canadian community to Central Huron and the entire county as a place to settle in the future. Kaushik Patel, who moved to Central Huron about seven years ago, they were trying to "bring people together'.' Patel said although many new immigrants to Canada may feel more comfortable in bigger cities such as Toronto, there are many opportunities for them in rural communities. The Overseas Friends of the Bharatia Janata Party (OFBJP) were invited to the event. It is a group that supports the current govern- ment in India and aims to bridge relationships between people of Indian origin and Canadians. They also seek to project a "positive and correct image" of India in the media. Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn welcomed those in attendance and said he hoped they find something in the area that grabs their interest. "Relationships with other ethnicities only strengthens our municipality" he said. He spoke highly of Patel, noting, "He does a lot for the county: Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb echoed the praise for Patel. "He's such an entrepreneur, Lobb said, adding what a valuable trait that is when studies show many Canadians are losing their entrepreneurial spirit. He said he could draw a parallel between Huron County and India because 70% to 80% of people in India are involved in agriculture. "Our goal is to create bonds between the people of India and Canadians" he said. Patel said there are about 15 families with Indian background in Huron County and he hopes that number will grow in the future. "We will try to do everything we can to help Cen- tral Huron" he said. Grade 4 and 5 students at Hullett Central Public School become informed voters Dave Flaherty for the News Record Students in Ms. Elder's Grade 4/5 class at Hullett Central Public School may have been more informed about last week's provincial election than many people who can legally vote. Elder said the class discussed all the parties and their platforms leading up to June 12. She said she was pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest the students showed in. The students were allowed to participate in a mock vote, with Elder stating most of them supported the Liberals or NDP. Students Ella Sawchuk and Kiara Driscoll said they enjoyed talking about the election with their fellow students and with their families as well. Plenty of live racing action on track, and winning off track for the large crowd on hand as the fourth week of Clinton Raceway's 2014 live season got under way. Father's and their children of all ages, from all over South-western Ontario made their way to Clinton on another beautiful sunny day. The Super Sunday Show had give-aways between each race to keep them entertained, and the horses didn't disappoint with great on track action. Race two was a battle at the wire between the five, Decroft Havaball, and six Talkin Foolish. It was Decroft Havaball that managed the win for Clinton Trainer Randy Marriage for owner Clarence Dekens of Clinton, and driven to victory by Trevor Henry Ninette B, for Jane Kerr of Goderich (trained by Denis Kerr) and Kittykittybangbang, for Lema Chapple of Wingham rounded out the triactor in the fourth race on the days card, while fourth post Torches Angel trained by Peter Hamilton and owned by Catherine McClure of Clinton managed a second place finish is the second last race of the day. The final race on the card, was a battle in the stretch as Live For Today, owned by Catherine & Darcy McClure of Clinton, and trained by Darcy edged out a second place Albergetty. An on track attendance of over 550 and handle just shy of $24,000 was recorded. The fun and racing continues at Clinton Raceway Sunday June 22 with the ever popular miniature exhibition horse race on track, with a meet and greet with the horses. Live race post time 1:30pm.
