Thompson launches Huron -Bruce Liberal
nomination bid surrounded by family and friends
More than 100 people from all
across the riding of Huron -
Bruce jammed into the King's
Pearl Pub in Tiverton for the
official launch of Allan Thomp-
son's bid for the federal Liberal
nomination in the riding.
"Right here, at home, sur-
rounded by family and friends, it
is my honour to present myself
as a candidate for the Liberal
Party of Canada nomination
here in Huron -Bruce," Thomp-
son said.
He was introduced at the
event by Dorne Fitzsimmons,
former Reeve of the town of
Tiverton and a prominent mem-
ber of the community who is
backing Thompson's candidacy.
Thompson underlined how
important it was to him to be
making this announcement at
home, surrounded by all of his
family.
In addition to his immediate
family - wife Roula El-Rifai, son
Laith, mother Eleanor Thomp-
son, brothers Gordon and Tom
Thompson and sister Nancy
Alexander and their spouses -
Thompson was also joined by a
number of aunts, uncles, neph-
ews, cousins and scores of other
friends and supporters.
Paul Steckle, who represented
Huron -Bruce as a Liberal MP for
five terms from 1993-2008,
attended the gathering in his
capacity as a member of the exec-
utive of the Huron -Bruce Federal
Liberal Association. Steckle is a
member of the association's can-
didate search committee and
noted that he will attend all nomi-
nation launch events.
Murray Elston, who repre-
sented the riding provincially
from 1981-1994 and is also a
member of the local riding asso-
ciation executive, was also in
attendance.
Abroad cross section of promi-
nent Liberal activists from across
the riding joined in to support
Thompson's candidacy.
"Having practised law in
Huron -Bruce for 43 years and
working for the Liberal party for
some 51 years I honestly feel that
with Allan's outstanding back-
ground and exceptional achieve-
ments we will find, upon a suc-
cessful nomination and election,
Huron -Bruce will be represented
by a cabinet minister;" said Keith I.
McLean, a lawyer from Exeter.
He was echoed by Bob Swart -
man of Kippen, who managed
two of Steckle's successful elec-
tion campaigns and also ran the
riding office for 13 years.
"I am excited to support Allan
Thompson as our Liberal candi-
date for the next federal election,"
Swartman said. "Allan is smart
and passionate, has an impressive
professional background and
deep roots in the riding. I believe
he is just the person to take on the
Conservatives and win."
Ross Lamont, former presi-
dent of the Ontario Liberal Party
and a longtime party organizer
in the riding, called Thompson
"the kind of person that effec-
tively represent Huron -Bruce in
Ottawa and as part of the Liberal
Party help restore the kind of
government that Canadian's
deserve."
"Allan embodies the true
meaning of Liberalism. He is
caring, intelligent, organized
and focused on improving the
lives of all citizens of
Huron -Bruce, in Canada and
the world at large, said June Van
Bastelaar, a retired educator
from Port Elgin.
In his remarks, Thompson
talked about the importance of
his farm upbringing and the
social values and work ethic that
went along with it. He also said
he thinks that his experience
working as a political reporter
on Parliament Hill and writing
about immigration policy gives
him a good background to work
as a Member of Parliament and
effectively represent the people
of Huron -Bruce.
"Allan's rural values com-
bined with his national and
international journalism experi-
ence will ensure the interests of
constituents in Huron -Bruce
will be served in Ottawa," said Al
Ribbink, a Tiverton -area farmer
who is also a director of the Pen-
etangore Regional Economic
Development Corporation.
He was echoed by Stan Eby, a
Kincardine -area beef farmer
and former president of the
Canadian Cattlemen's
Association.
"Raised on a family farm and
well educated, Allan has a good
understanding of issues related
to this area," Eby said. "His pro-
fession has given him a perspec-
tive of how government should
work to benefit all society."
"Politics is a calling that
requires personal commitment,
the intellectual ability to make
the tough decisions, and the
desire to make a difference.
Allan has all of these qualities
and many more," added Ann
MacKay, a businessperson in
Port Elgin.
