CAD$20 million loan
for Sarnia plant
BioAmber Inc. (NYSE:
BIOA), an industrial biotech-
nology company producing
sustainable chemicals,
announced that its Canadian
subsidiary BioAmber Sarnia
Inc., a Joint Venture with Mit-
sui & Co., has secured a CDN
$7 million grant from Sustain-
able Development Technol-
ogy Canada (SDTC). The
funds will be used to support
the ongoing construction of
the CDN$135 million (US$125
million) bio -succinic acid
plant that is under construc-
tion in Sarnia Ontario.
This grant comes in addi-
tion to the $7.5 million grant
that SDTC provided to Bio -
Amber Sarnia in 2012. Bio -
Amber secured this addi-
tional funding after
expanding the scope of the
Sarnia plant, nearly doubling
the production capacity
from 17,000 metric tons to
30,000 metric tons per year,
and increasing the number
of jobs that will be created.
The SDTC grant also sup-
ports the switch to BioAm-
ber's second -generation
yeast, which proved to be
significantly more cost com-
petitive than the bacteria -
based fermentation origi-
nally designed to operate in
Sarnia.
When completed in early
2015, the Sarnia plant will be
the world's largest succinic
acid production facility. Bio -
Amber has secured signifi-
cant demand for the plant,
including a take -or -pay con-
tract with PTTMCC Bio-
chem, a joint venture
between Mitsubishi Chemi-
cal of Japan and PTT PCL of
Thailand, which guarantees
the sale of approximately
20% of total plant capacity.
In addition, BioAmber has
signed 19 supply and distri-
bution agreements and 8
memorandum of under-
standing, which collectively
represent demand that
exceeds the plant's annual
capacity.
Mike Hartmann, Exec VP
of BioAmber, thanked
SDTC for the additional
Sarnia plant funding.
"Commercializing an inno-
vative, clean technology
that is cost disruptive to the
petrochemical industry is a
major undertaking, and it
needs government support
to become a reality. We are
making chemicals cleaner
and cheaper than the pet-
rochemical route, and this
will translate into lasting
environmental and eco-
nomic benefits for Canada"

MVCA directors plant first carbon compensation trees
The Maitland Valley Conserva-
tion Authority (MVCA) Board of
Directors planted trees recently in
Wingham at the Turnberry Flood-
plain Conservation Area. The
Directors planted Black Cherry and
Bur Oak trees. The site is on the
east side of Helena St.
The MVCA Board of Directors
has made a commitment to plant
trees to compensate for the green-
house gas emissions caused by our
organization's vehicle use. Staff
have tracked the litres of fuel used
by our vehicles and equipment
including the mileage of Directors
travelling to -and -from MVCA
meetings. In 2013 the MVCA used
approximately 12,500 litres of fuel.
The first trees to help compensate
for this fuel consumption are being
planted today - 20 Black Cherry
and Burr Oak trees.
This is just the beginning of the
MVCA's carbon compensation ini-
tiative. As the program gears up the
Conservation Authority will be
working to plant approximately 185
trees per year. The number of trees
will be recalculated ear year based
on the amount of fuel we've used.
To fund the program the MVCA has
increased motor pool expenses by
1 cent per km. The organization
has also moved to smaller, fuel effi-
cient vehicles to reduce our overall
fuel consumption.
As the project moves forward it
will assist the MVCA with reforest-
ing 100 acres of land spread across
six Conservation Areas that is cur-
rently used for agriculture. Much of
this is marginal farmland and
reforesting it will help to buffer

sensitive areas and promote good
stewardship practices.
The public is also being invited to
lighten their carbon footprint. The
Footprints to Forest Carbon Com-
pensation program was recently
launched by the MVCA, Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority and
the County of Huron. Visitors to
www.footprintstoforests can calcu-
late their carbon footprint based on
vehicle use, home energy and air
travel. The calculation outlines the
number of trees required to compen-
sate for their carbon footprint.
Visitors are welcome to donate the
value of their entire footprint or part of
it. Donations will be used to plant trees
on conservation lands in the Maitland
and Ausable Bayfield watersheds.
Charitable receipts are provided for all
donations.
