HURON COUNTY Our school aged kids are brimming over with excitement and are very eager to start their summer break holidays. The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment would like to remind motorists to drive with extra care. With children now out of school, there will be an increased amount of pedestrian and bicycle traffic on our streets. Drivers need to be prepared for the unexpected, such as child that dangerously crosses into the path of your vehicle. Motorists are reminded to: - Drive with care, especially near parks, playgrounds and recreation centres. - When coming upon bicycles give them extra space, some young riders are still learn- ing the rules of the road and have difficulty balancing their bikes. - Slow down, and keep an eye for children playing near the street, be prepared to brake and/or take evasive action. Parents, this is an opportune time to have a safety discussion with your child. Some points of discussion may include: - Remind your children of the importance of pedestrian & cycling rules of the road, partic- ularly when walking and crossing the street. - Bicycle helmets are the law for those under 18. Remember, children often model their parent's behaviour. Be a good example and wear a helmet. - Wear bright fluorescent clothing or arti- cles of clothing when biking or walking at night. Be Visible - Be Safe! - Respect the power of the water and wear a lifejacket when in deep water. And for all the kids out there, keep in mind our Huron OPP officers will be on the lookout for those students that are following the rules and being a good role model to others. As a reward, you may end up with a coupon for a free Mac's "Froster': Have a safe and enjoyable summer.
