Bayfield rummage sale known as one
of the largest and oldest in country
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
On Fri., July 11, Pioneer
Park's 67th Annual Rum-
mage Sale will take place
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bay-
field Community Centre
Arena. Second hand items
including antiques, furniture
and kitchenware will be on
display and there will also be
a silent auction.
The rummage sale is one
of the largest and oldest
rummage sales in the coun-
try. One of its main purposes
throughout the years has
always been to raise money
for Pioneer Park in Bayfield,
the only remaining undevel-
oped lakefront property on
the hill overlooking the Bay-
field River and Lake Huron.
In 1945, Lucy Woods
Diehl, a life-long Bayfield
resident, along with eight of
her friends, both summer
cottagers and permanent
residents, purchased the
parkland. It was Diehl's wish
that the park be owned and
operated by an association
as opposed to an individual
and today that association
still exists. Today, the Pio-
neer Park Association con-
sists of volunteers and board
members who are con-
cerned with the preservation
of the park just as Diehl was
69 years ago. The
association's mission is to
promote the health and
enjoyment of the Bayfield
area by owning and manag-
ing Pioneer Park and other
public parks without charge
as well as to undertake other
projects for the welfare of the
community.
The rummage sale is a free
event and organizers
encourage people to arrive
early as line-ups form
quickly.
MLB pros coming to Clinton to coach baseball camp
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
This summer the Kelly
Gruber Silver Slugger Base-
ball Camp will be held at five
different locations within
Canada and Clinton is one of
them. From July 14 to 15 the
popular camp, hosted by
Clinton Minor Baseball, will
be held at the Clinton Com-
munity Ball Park located at
129 Beech Street.
True to its name, the base-
ball camp is organized by
World Series Champion and
Major League Baseball All-
Star, Kelly Gruber. Above all,
the camp aims to promote
baseball as a sport, learn key
skills, have fun and provide
opportunities throughout
the country for young people
to play the game.
Even though the Clinton
camp is currently full, organ-
izers still encourage the pub-
lic to come out and watch
the pros coach. Coaches this
year include Kelly Gruber
himself, Bill "Spaceman"
Lee, an American former
MLB pitcher, Scott Bullett, a
former MLB outfielder,
Candy Maldonado, a former
MLB outfielder, Lloyd
Moseby, a MLB center
fielder, Mark Eichhorn, a
retired MLB pitcher, Nigel
Wilson, a Canadian former
MLB player, and Zach Fer-
nandez, a semi -pro baseball
pitcher.
