Clinton News Record, 2014-07-02, Page 32014 WOBA Ontario Summer
Games baseball team announced
The baseball team that will
represent the Western
Ontario Baseball Association
at the 2014 Ontario Summer
Games has been announced.
Listowel Minor Baseball
leads the way with five play-
ers having made the squad,
followed by St. Marys and
Goderich with three apiece,
as well as one player from
each of Exeter, Lucan, Mitch-
ell, Owen Sound, and Sau-
geen Shores. There are nine
second -year Bantam players,
aged 15, along with seven
WOBA Storm players, who
are first-year Bantams (14)
playing in the InterCounty
League.
The team will take the field
as a unit for the first time this
coming weekend at the Spar-
tan Splash tournament in
East Lansing, Michigan. All
players will continue to play
with their WOBA club team
throughout the season, and
will practice as Team WOBA
on weekends. They are seek-
ing to play in one further
tournament in either late
July or early August, prior to
the Ontario Summer Games,
that will be held August 7-10,
2014 in Windsor, Ontario.
Toronto, as well as the host
team from Windsor, are con-
sidered to be the top two
medal contenders.
The Ontario Summer
Games began in 1970 as a
showcase for amateur sport.
They have now become
Ontario's largest multi -sport
event, including both team
and individual sports. The
OSG take place every two
years, and features 22 sports,
involving approximately
3,200 people including ath-
letes, coaches, managers,
and officials. To be eligible
to participate, an athlete
must be 15 years old or
younger.
"The Summer Games has
the feel of a mini -Olympics,
with an athletes' village, an
Opening Ceremonies, and
because we will be compet-
ing with and against

RECVCLE;
Ontario's top 12 teams and arguably the
top 192 players in the province," said
Valcke, a St. Marys resident who is cur-
rently the field manager/GM of the
iCASE Baseball Academy based in
Stratford.
"The WOBA has been traditionally
challenged in this event simply due to
the population bases of the competing
regions, and this year, seven of our 16
players are a year younger than most of
the other players in the competition.
But this is a good collection of players,
scrappy, coachable, and already with a
strong chemistry. We will not be out -
hustled by anybody, and we feel that
the 2014 version of this team will be a
case in point for the whole being
greater than the sum of its parts."
