sang "Draw the Circle Wide': During
the children's time at the front Minis-
ter Terry Fletcher told them the story
of the Arab sheik/king and the camel.
On a cold night in the desert, the camel
decided it would be warmer for him in
the sheik's tent. The sheik, who was too
lazy to object to the camel nosing his
way in, eventually was on the outside
of the tent while the camel stayed
warm. Terry remarked that sometimes
we think that doing just a little wrong
doesn't matter. He suggested the chil-
dren should consider and talk about
what the king should have done differ-
ently in the beginning.
The message for the adults was titled
"By Any Other Name". Supporting
scripture
passages were responsive Psalm 36
and John 1: 29-42. In the New Testa-
ment passage John the Baptist tells
about the baptism of Christ, the Lamb
of God. When John and his brother,
Simon, saw Jesus they followed Him.
During their encounter Jesus renamed
Simon, Cephas, which means Peter.
In a passage in the play Romeo and
Juliet by Shakespeare, the question is
posed, What's in a name? These two
characters were doomed because of
their names as the families were ene-
mies. Native cultures are in the habit of
renaming persons according to life
events, aging, character, etc. Through-
out the Bible many persons were
renamed to suit their circumstances in
politics, religion and sometimes by
God. For example, Abraham, Joseph,
Daniel, the apostle Paul.

people, He is able to look inside and,
as in Simon's case, choose a name
more suitable to the personality. He
looks not at actualities but at possibili-
ties; not what we are, but what we can
be. Terry posed these questions. What
name might Jesus give us? What might
He see in us?
God can see and release the true
person in each of us if we have faith.
The following is just an aside and
taken out of context because the snow
is swirling again outside my windows.
The morning's order of service con-
tained a quote by Canadian writer,
Margaret Atwood. Part of the quote
"The Eskimos had fifty-two names for
snow..." By now in the winter of
2013/2014 you may have used all of
them and more!
