Clinton News Record, 2014-01-15, Page 7Snowmobilers get an
early start to season
DThe North Huron Snowmobile Club was out get-
ting the trails back under control Thursday, Jan. 9, after
three solid days of snowstorm that closed all roads in
Huron County for days.
President Adrian Salverda noted that unlike the
highways, trails don't close when the weather gets
rough, but the groomers stay home when it storms like
this past week.
"We've got a mess ahead of us now," he said Thurs-
day. "It's all fresh powder and drifts."
Blowing snow created large drifts around bushes and
fence lines, and in some places, the groomers were cut-
ting through drifts eight feet deep. On top of that, one
of the groomers got stuck Thursday, and needed to be
dug out by an excavator. But, for the snowmobile club,
it's all part of the job.
"That's the no -fun part," Salverda said. "We were
hoping to be all over (Thursday) but it's slow, slow
going."
All told, the club looks after about 400 kilometres of
trail with two groomers. Salverda said sledders are
lucky if they get six weeks in for the year, but this year
the season opened Dec. 31, nearly two weeks earlier
than normal.
There are more than 400 members in the club this
year, all of them looking to the weekend forecast, where
temperatures rose above zero after a week of minus
double -digits.

Herman Greidanus blows out his laneway Jan. 8, as
Clinton got hit with its third day of heavy snowfall.
The town was effectively cut off from the outside
world for the start of last week, as highways were
closed for days due to the blizzard.
