passage was Matthew 25:
31- 46. In those verses Mat-
thew speaks of the coming of
Christ and our prepared-
ness. Like the sheep, will
God find that persons will
have treated all others in
their world like God Himself
and find their reward? Or,
like the goats in the scripture
verses, will some be found
wanting in their attitude to
others? These verses from
the New Testament echo the
forecast by Ezekiel in the Old
Testament.
The central meaning of
these verses is that what one
does to/for another human
being, they are doing to/for
God. All too often assump-
tions are made as to whom
deserves our charity.
Terry remarked that this is
a fact of our very human
nature.
St. Francis of Assisi had his
life changed the day he
encountered a leper. In that
person, for all his problems,
St. Francis saw the face of
God. A Roman soldier, Mar-
tin, was thanked in his
dreams by God for giving
half his tunic to a beggar at
the town gates. Mother The-
resa spent her life seeking
the face of God everywhere
and in everyone she met.
Rev Fletcher ended his
message with the story of
Ruth, a poor woman who
received a letter saying Jesus
was coming for lunch. On
her return from the store
with a meager lunch bought
with her last few dollars,
Ruth met a couple who were
asking for help. After some
consideration, Ruth not only
gave the man and his wife
her food but also her coat. A
letter from Jesus awaited her
return home thanking Ruth
for the meal and coat. In
poorness came the face of
God and Ruth responded as
a sheep.
The mitten tree is ready to
receive donations of hats,
mitts, scarves and socks until
the end of November.
Next Sunday the Sacra-
ment of Holy Communion
will be offered. The annual
White Gift Service will be
presented on December 7th.
Flowers on the commun-
ion table were placed in
memory of Edythe Beacom
by her family of nieces and
nephews. Edythe passed
away on November 17th at
the age of 99. Edythe was a
devoted schoolteacher and
lived most of her adult life in
Londesborough. Before her
move some years ago to
Huronview, Edythe was a
faithful church attendee and
had been active in the UCW.
Her funeral was held on Sat-
urday, the 22nd. Sympathy
and prayers are offered to
those who mourn her death.
UCW CHRISTMAS PARTY
Approximately 50 ladies
braved the winter weather to
spend a warm and friendly
Christmas evening of
sisterhood together at
Londesborough United
Church on Monday, Novem-
ber 17th. The group included
Londesborough United
Church ladies, community
ladies, guests from Auburn
UCW. Donations for the
Women's Shelter and the
Room2Grow program were
welcomed by representa-
tives of those groups in
attendance as well.
The Sunday School room
and the tables, beautifully
decorated for the season,
were a warm welcome from
the cold. The chatter
throughout the social
aspects of the evening and
the bountiful pot luck meal
indicated everyone was
enjoying being together.
A fun game following the
meal asked the question "If
you were coaching a team that
has never experienced Christ-
mas before, what three strate-
gies would you tell them are
absolute musts in order to
enjoy the season and why?"
Answers included - surround
yourself with the love of family
and friends; sing carols, tell
the Christmas story; exchange
thoughtful gifts; do something
special for another member of
the team. All suggestions were
reminders to all of us of how
to make the season
meaningful.
The meditation/ program
was 'A Wreath of Christmas': It
was prefaced by the question
"If Jesus had not come to
earth, how would this world
be different for the souls of
men?" Each of the six ladies
involved added a word petal
to the wreath and explained
the word as it pertained to the
Christmas story - hope, joy,
salvation, guidance, praise,
worship, love, light, freedom
and life. Each word was sup-
ported by a scripture reading.
Appropriate carols were sung
as the program evolved. The
program ended with a prayer.
Many "Merry Christmas"
wishes were exchanged as the
evening came to a close.
