(Dennyscottphotos) Rising crime concerns councillors By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek says he's growing more concerned by the day about crime in his township and the county at large. At Huron County Council's Oct. 4 meeting, Van Diepenbeek raised the issue, saying that while he didn't know what could be done, he felt property crime was getting away from the authorities in Huron County. Van Diepenbeek relayed stories he had heard from his township about theft and break -and -enters and the Ontario Provincial Police being powerless to stop it. He said that it was becoming more complicated for police to investigate these crimes because their hands were being tied by the justice system. He recounted stories of ATVs, vehicles and tools being stolen and, though the victims know exactly where their property has been taken, the police being powerless to investigate without a warrant. This delay in justice, he said, has led to some citizens taking the law into their own hands, feeling that police can't help them. He also told of a recent case where, because the keys were left in a farm vehicle, a judge looked upon that theft as being minor, which he felt was just wrong. Goderich Deputy -Mayor Jim Donnelly said that on a foundational level he agreed with Van Diepenbeek, but as a long-time judge who has been off the bench for 12 years, he couldn't offer an official opinion without knowing the circumstances. Chief Administrative Officer Meighan Wark said that staff was already in the planning stages of asking OPP Inspector Jason Younan to come to a future meeting to Get wedding advice and tips, see a case study and read about local brides on the Brides in Huron section of our website www.northhuron.on,ca discuss some issues. The state of crime and law enforcement in Huron County, she said, could easily be added to the agenda of that presentation. Wark said she anticipated that Younan would be speaking with Huron County Council at a meeting before the end of the year. PAGE 7. Festival of Wizardry visitors a `cool' sight PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 Last Tuesday, a crew from Miller/Lavis Construction worked on the surface of the bridge south of the village, hoping to solve the riddle of the hole that kept opening up. It appears they tore up and replaced a wide strip of the pavement at both ends where perhaps the bridge itself joined the highway surface. It will be interesting to see next spring if the problem has been rectified. I understand the Festival of Wizardry was cancelled because of the wind and rain on Sunday. That's unfortunate for the organizers and the ticket holders who may not have been there on Saturday. When the Thanksgiving weekend weather was so pleasant, it was too bad Mother Nature didn't co-operate. We slipped back to Blyth on Saturday to see how attendance was. How cool to see so many fans turn out and in costume as well and all seemed to be enjoying the experience. It occurred to me that if someone had saved those black choir gowns churches had used for so many years, there would have been a ready market for them with festival goers. The former McEwing bungalow in the village has new owners. Jeff Van Wyk and Alyssa Robertson decided it was a perfect house in which to start life together. I thought it ironic to learn that Jeff is an electrical apprentice given that Jim McEwing did his share of wiring for years. Alyssa, who hails from Gorrie, is the audiologist at the hearing care centre in Clinton. Welcome to our community. Offering special music at Londesborough United's anniversary service this coming Sunday will be a McNall-Szusz connection. There will be a time of fellowship following the service. Have you got your tickets yet for Londesborough United Church's smoked pork chop supper on Thursday, Oct. 26? The supper is served at the community hall from 5 to 7 p.m. that day. Take-outs are also available. Ladies of the congregation are needed to make the apple pies for the meal on Wed. Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the church.
