Elementary School Fair sees increases this year
A historic event
The Elementary School Fair was the talk of Belgrave last week, welcoming students from all
over the community to take part. Fair President Alice McDowell says the fair saw modest
increases across the board this year thanks to the inclusion of Sacred Heart Catholic School
students from Wingham and a return to games from years past. From left: North Huron Reeve

Last weeks' Elementary School
Fair benefitted from great weather,
both on the day of the event and in
the growing season leading up to it.
Fair President Alice McDowell
said that numbers -wise, the fair had
more exhibits this year than last year
which is partly due to it being the
first full year Sacred Heart School
has participated and partly due to the
temperate spring and summer in the
area.
"We had a great growing season so
we had a lot of very good-looking
exhibits," she explained. "There
were vegetables and flowers and
everything looked nice."
McDowell said that hotter
summers often cause earlier harvests
or droughts which can eventually
lead to produce not making it to the
event. This year, however, with more
varied weather and plenty of
moisture, the exhibits looked great
she said.
Last year, Sacred Heart Catholic
School was welcomed to the fair for

For their anniversary service,
Knox United Church was all decked
out in fall colours, most of which
was thanks to Ruth Gordon's talent
for growing and arranging flowers.
There were also flowers placed in

Dow was the guest preacher while

acknowledged along with happy
news of a new grandson for Doug

the first time and this year marked
the first full year students knew they
would participate, allowing them to
take part in the event.
McDowell said the 4-H
competitions also showed off several
students' efforts throughout the year.
The weather on the day of the fair
was also warm and sunny,
McDowell said, which was
appreciated by the school children
involved and also brought out
community members and parents.
The committee behind the event
has also been trying to include
bigger events for entire groups to
enjoy, McDowell said, and this year
was no exception.
Last year, the fair featured a
reptile show and this year it had a
canine agility show which she said
was a hit.
"The show featured a dog racing a
pig and, eventually, children able to
race the dogs as well," she said.
"The people at the fair really
enjoyed it."
The event also brought back some
of the activities that had been part of
the fair for years prior to the
amalgamation of several of the
schools involved.
"We were able to bring some
games back," she said, talking about
the tug-of-war and sack races. "We
had a great volunteer in Nikki
Freiburger who organized that"
FROM BELGRAVE
McDowell said thanks had to go to
Freiburger and the rest of the
volunteers, committee members and
community supporters behind the
fair as it wouldn't happen without
them.
"It's a total volunteer effort," she
said. "The children are the only ones
who are competing at the event,
which makes the fair unique, and
also shows that the volunteers are
really in it for the children. A
huge thank you has to go to all
of them"
On their way
The Elementary School Fair in Belgrave just wouldn't be the same if there wasn't a parade to
kick it off every year. Here are students from Maitland River Elementary School making their
way to the fairgrounds as part of the parade. (Denny Scott photo)
