(Denny Scott photo) Boonstoppels mark 50 years Milestone Hans and Audrey Boonstoppel of Blyth recently marked their 50th wedding anniversary, welcoming guests from as far away as Holland, California and British Columbia to help them celebrate. (Photo submitted) After 50 years of marriage, Hans and Audrey Boonstoppel of Blyth passed the Not -So -Newlywed game with flying colours (or hats and socks) to the delight of their guests at their anniversary celebration held Aug. 11 at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. With special guests from Holland, California and British Columbia, along with their three children and 11 grandchildren, Hans and Audrey celebrated a marriage that began on Aug. 11, 1967 at the Exeter Reformed Church. Rev. Harmon Heeg married the couple. Audrey's attendants were her sisters Maria Young, Wilma Rammeloo and Anne Graul, while Hans's groomsmen were Dinant DeVries, Roelof DeVries and Bill Gerrits. The couple honeymooned in Ottawa and Manitoulin Island before moving to Campbellville, then Maryhill before settling on a dairy farm in Auburn. They were dairy farmers for their entire careers, with Audrey later working as a crisis counsellor for the Huron Women's Shelter. Retirement came in the late 1990s when they sold the dairy farm to family before building a new home across the road from the farm, selling it and building another new home in Blyth where they currently live. The couple's children and grandchildren are: Lisa Pot and ex- husband Freddy with children Jesse, Linaya, Rick, Benjamin, Maria and Karin Pot; Tanya Verburg and husband Raymond with children Nathan and Justine, and David Boonstoppel and wife Elly with sons James, Calvin and Ryan. Currently, Hans and Audrey are active members of the Blyth Christian Reformed Church. Hans is a member of the Men of Note choir and plays an active role in son David's dairy goat farm. Audrey enjoys her book club, knitting and hosting guests at her bed and breakfast. The couple travel extensively in their RV and spend winters in Florida. The anniversary party was a special event for the couple to celebrate a happy marriage in which they expressed how blessed they felt to have each other, their children and grandchildren and a life of faith. BIA to address new associate members By Denny Scott The Citizen Under its new board of directors, the Blyth Business Improvement Area (BIA) started the process of changing several aspects of its operation during its Sept. 6 monthly meeting. New Chair of the BIA Karen Stewart said she wanted to clear up some confusion with the association/affiliate membership program. Stewart said she went over the information provided to her when she took office, including the BIA's constitution and minutes, and said, by her understanding, the constitution doesn't allow for associate memberships, contrary to some early discussion on the topic. The first discussion at the September meeting regarding the issue revolved around whether or not potential associate members could vote and it was revealed that one associate member would be able to vote as part of regular executive meetings, but not at annual general meetings. One associate member would be named to the board of directors, which would allow him/her voting privileges. This individual would be appointed by the existing board of directors according to the BIA constitution, Stewart said. The second discussion about the issue revolved around how much a membership should cost. Originally, associate memberships were discussed as being available for $95, however the cost was similar to what actual members were being charged according to North Huron Council representative Bill Knott. Stewart said there were many questions yet to be answered and wanted to push the issue to a recently -formed governance committee that consists of members of both the Wingham and Blyth BIAs. While the issue wasn't resolved during the meeting, Stewart said it was something that needed to be handled quickly. "I have to stress, we have to make a decision on this very soon," she said. "We can't have a situation where we have a business that wants to join and have to say `I don't even know if you can."' "Every child should have the opportunity to play Canada's National Sport..."
