PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
Judging time
Time closed in on the Brussels Fall Fair on Monday, as submissions closed at 11 a.m. that day
to allow Brussels Agricultural Society members to transport items to the International Plowing
Match in Walton, the home of the fair for the next few days. Leona Armstrong, right, and others
were up to bat at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, however, as judging for
the flowers, as well as other categories, was done at the arena to ensure they were judged
before they could potentially be altered in transport to Walton. The fall fair runs all week until
the IPM closes on Saturday evening. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Council supports new cemetery
The process for the creation and
long-term maintenance of a
Mennonite cemetery is at the heart
of a decision made by Morris-
Turnberry Council last week.
A Morris-Turnberry Mennonite
community is planning on building a
cemetery and church on a property
adjacent to an existing community
school at the corner of Jeffrey Line
and Glenannon Road.
The plan was presented at
council's Sept. 5 meeting and
requires exemptions from the
minimum distance setback formula
in Morris-Turnberry. Council,
however, was more concerned with
how the community pursued
permission to create a cemetery and
what would happen to the land if the
community moved from the area.
Deacon Mervin Martin explained
both how the community got
permission and how the site would
be cared for in perpetuity.
"We had to work with the
bereavement group of Ontario and
ask for things specifically," he said.
"Primarily, we have to request
council approval and permission
from the neighbours and we will
likely need approvals from the
Huron County Health Unit."
Martin explained he has been
through the process before,
explaining that, normally, a
$100,000 bond is put up to back the
cemetery if it is abandoned.
Mennonite communities, however,
are exempt from this requirement as
they work together to make sure the
lands are cared for.
"If we disappear, the other
Mennonite communities need to take
responsibility to make sure the
cemetery is kept up," he said. "That
has been approved already."
Councillor Dorothy Kelly asked if
the church would be built if the
cemetery wasn't approved at the
provincial level, to which Martin
said it would.
"We would prefer to have the
cemetery there," he said. "It would
be an inconvenience to not have it
there, but the church will be built"
The site will also be exempted
from an official stormwater
management plan drafted by an
engineer.

Karen Uhler was one of the many volunteers from the
Brussels Agricultural Society who was busy on Monday
morning accepting submissions for the Brussels Fall Fair at
its one -time -only home at the International Plowing Match in
Walton. The group accepted submissions until 11 a.m. that
day ahead of opening to the world on Tuesday, the first day

We are in the middle of the
International Plowing Match and
that will make for some long days
and a busy time. There are fields of
crops coming off as well, so it is a
busy time in the area.
The Smith girls have had quite the
summer. Lexi Smith enjoyed her
road trip to Alberta and saw lots of
beautiful scenery. Delayna Smith
had a very abrupt halt to her summer
vacation as she decided at the last
minute to try out for the Carleton
University varsity soccer team and
she made it. She is very excited to be
playing a high level sport along with
studying industrial design
engineering. Not to be left out,
brother Bennett Smith has a buddy
joining him for three months from
Spain. Lucas will be going to St.
James to further his English and to
learn our way of life.
The Chris Smith family had a
surprise for Fred and Tueni Smith
over the Labour Day weekend. They
had a barn quilt made and, with the
help of Greg and Trudy Ryan, had it
hanging on Fred's barn when they
came home.
Our condolences to the Machan
family on the passing of Doug
Machan. He will be missed by his
wife Florence and his children
Linda, Vicki and Paul and their
families. Doug was a farmer and
carpenter and his number -one
priority was his family. He loved his
visits with the kids and
grandchildren and always had his
sense of humour. Our sympathies to
all.
The Walton Ball Park was the
place for a charity fundraiser on
Friday evening. The employees of
Farm Fredit Canada (FCC) from
around the area played ball against
each other for the cause "Drive
Away Hunger". The group raised
over $500 for the cause. Way to go
to our local FCC employees! FCC
has donated $100,000 to school
meal programs across Canada. FCC
offices across Canada are collecting
food and cash donations until Oct.
13. Their goal is to collect the
equivalent of five million meals for
Canada's food banks and hunger
programs.
Congratulations to Brent
Robinson who has been elected as
Chair of the Canadian Centre for
Swine Improvement at the
convention in Ottawa. Brent is an
owner of Vista Villa Farms of
Walton. Vista Villa was started by
Bob and Rose Robinson and is
celebrating 50 years in business this
year. Congrats!
