Service a `marvelous beginning' for IPM
Praying for good weather
The International Plowing Match (IPM) may have officially started on Tuesday, however the
grounds were open on Sunday for a special church service at the site. The event was led by
former Egmondville United Church minister Steve Hildebrand and featured a 150 -member -
strong choir led by Katie Dockstader. The service featured former Blyth United Church Minister
Rev. Gary Clark and IPM Chair Jacquie Bishop also spoke. (Quinn Talbot photo)

What a marvelous beginning to the
International Plowing Match (IPM)
with the church service on Sunday
afternoon in the tented city.
A church constructed with bales
from Flynn Farms with design and
work by Jim Hallahan and Matt
Townsend was a perfect place to
gather, to set the tone of the coming
week. Rev. Gary Clark co-ordinated
a great service of Thanksgiving and
potential for growth. To open the
afternoon IPM Chair Jacquie
Bishop, in her calm and humble
At the Branch
style acknowledged the hundreds of
volunteers who have made this 100th
IPM event happen. Bill and Colleen
would be so proud of her.
Don Priest, the Ontario Plowmen's
Association President acknowledged
Jacquie's leadership and the many
volunteers, but also spoke to the
reality that when people commit to
jobs such as this, family is left to
keep things running at home, so
Kevin and their daughters were
thanked for all their work as well.
Steve Hildebrand, a former
Egmondville United Church
minister, led the worship service in
Huron County style with humour,
challenge and thanksgiving. Over
150 people formed a unique choir,
for IPM purpose with Katie
Dockstader in the lead. Louise
Dockstader handled the piano
with finesse for their two
offerings.
When over 1,000 people start to
sing, it takes talent to keep them on
track and this was ably done by Barb
Bosman and Glenda Morrison. The
benches sponsored by interested
IPM friends were tested at the
service and proved ready to be put
out ready for use on Tuesday. So
thank you to the planners and the
participants.
It was celebration time for
Soup&More2 last Friday, as it has
been running now for seven years.
Volunteers here too, give gladly of
their time and talents to make this a
fun place to have lunch. Join the
lunch bunch for good food every
Friday, except this one — our
volunteers are at the IPM. Elaine
Armstrong keeps things on track and
had a pretty fall cake as part of lunch
to note the special seventh
anniversary. The annual meeting for
this group is at the Presbyterian
church on Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Artifacts to be on display at IPM
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch started with the Brussels
Lions Club holding its first meeting
of the new year. President Brian
Keller conducted the meeting of the
18 Lions in attendance. They
enjoyed a pork tenderloin dinner
prepared by Judy Lee, Mabel
Glanville and Jo -Ann McDonald.
The Branch was the venue for the
celebration of life for the late Doug
Machan. A lovely social time was
had with the lunch being prepared
by the ladies of the Branch. Thanks
to Comrades Lisa Glanville, Joan
Smith, Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville,
Sandra Josling Brown, Judy
Emmrich, Deb Ross and Jo -Ann
McDonald.
When you are at the International
Plowing Match, we hope you have a
chance to see the display of artifacts,
assembled by Comrade Deb Ross
and displayed at the match. Deb has
been organizing articles for a while
and Saturday morning was set up
time. Thanks Deb for your hard
work.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had nine -and -a -half tables of work and now we are ready. The
players. Winners were: first, Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter;
second, Jean Bridge and Paulene
Bennett; third, Lois and Millie; lone
hands, Murray and Hank and Hazel
and Janet, six; low, Earl and Jean
Foster. Euchre is every two weeks.
It has been a week of preparation
Branch is hoping to feed lots of folks
and by the time the paper is out, we
hopefully, will be tired out. The
meals started with a fish fry on
Sunday night and there was a great
crowd of 170 people who enjoyed
the meal. Hopefully the rest of the
week goes as well.

1960s as part of the Pearson
government, he was one of the good
guys, who saw the need for social
and economic change and with heart
he helped make it happen. When
promoting Medicare he said "In an
industrial county such as ours we
cannot afford the loss of economy
stemming from ill health" and "we
cannot afford the social and
economic consequences of our
failure... [to approve every person
health coverage]". So to the
Pearsons, the Douglases and people
like Allan MacEachen we
acknowledge their important part in
the security we have in our lives. To
bring that home, the same paper had
Bernie Sanders trying to convince
the American politicians that
universal health care needs to
happen. Oh we are so blessed.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
