Brouwer family brings play and learn days to Maitside The Brouwer family tree The Brouwers took over Maitside Orchards last summer and while, admittedly, they had a lot to learn about apples in those early days, they have put in the work and are now ready for a grand opening of play and learn days at the orchard that will include numerous activities aimed at children and families. The Brouwers are seen here with some of the new art that adorns the business. From left: Monica, Heidi, James, Jared and Jesse. (Shawn loughtin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The new owners at Maitside Orchards, the Brouwer family, are introducing play and learn days at the farm, which are aimed at children and families in Huron County. Monica and her husband Jared, as well as their three children, five-year-old James, three-year-old Heidi and one -year-old Jesse, have been working diligently at the orchard and they're now set for their grand opening event this weekend. The grand opening will take place on Sept. 2 and 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Brouwers have lined up a number of activities for kids on those days that they plan to roll out every Friday, Saturday and holiday Monday of the apple - growing season. Children will be able to pick their own apples, take a hay ride, play orchard disc golf or in the farm's sand pit, they can hike back to the Maitland River, see the farm's "critter crews" which takes the farm animal experience beyond a traditional petting zoo and they can enjoy a slice of pie or some ice cream when they're done. The experience costs $5 per person or $20 per family plus HST. The Brouwers are very proud of the changes they've made in the year since they bought the orchard. They have maintained the Maitside line of products, including its famous apple cider, and have since expanded to include products from other Huron County purveyors. In addition to the indoor farmers' market, they hope to begin a local artisan market soon that will feature a number of local artists and creators. They have also installed seating and tables for a small cafe inside the Brussels building. Letter to the Editor 'The Pigeon King' impresses writer THE EDITOR, My wife and I recently attended the Blyth Festival production of The Pigeon King. What a superb play this was! It is undoubtedly the triumph of the season for the hard-working actors, stage managers and production assistants who bring us these unique insights into the everyday stories of the people who live in our community. This was a play created by the Festival company, headed up by Artistic Director Gil Garratt and director Severn Thompson. The Pigeon King is a "compelling story of hope, fraud, justice, forgiveness, despair and love" (to quote from the directors' notes) that chronicles the Ponzi scheme of an enterprising man who provided false hope to hundreds of local farmers, as well as individuals across Canada and the U.S. from 2001 until 2008. Based on facts, the creative team and six actors bring to life this amazing story that will keep you glued to your seat for the entire production. Gil Garratt's portrayal of Pigeon King Arlan Galbraith is mind- boggling and worthy of one of those acting awards that you hear about. All the actors perform superbly, in various roles, and they all play an instrument or two throughout the performance. The stage settings were believable, as were the actors who kept us all enthralled with how they portrayed the various characters. This is a play that should not be missed! I highly recommend it to all who want an evening of professional entertainment that brings the history of this farming community and the story of how it can be affected by one man's greed is told.
