On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold down $3 to $4. Choice steers and heifers sold $168 to $172 with a high of $177. Second cut sold $164 to $168. Cows sold on a strong trade at higher prices. On Thursday all classes of veal sold on a good active trade at prices $2 to $4 higher. Lambs sold steady. Goats sold steady to the week's decline. Sheep sold higher. On Friday calves and yearlings sold actively at steady prices. Noah and Neil Weppler of Ayton, consigned nine head that averaged 1,417 lbs. and sold for an average price of $171.64. Two steers averaged 1,550 lbs. and sold for $177. Fred Bieman of Ayton, consigned two black steers that averaged 1,525 lbs. and sold for an average price of $171.20. One black steer weighed 1,425 lbs. and sold for $176. George Roney of Staffa, consigned nine heifers that averaged 1,220 lbs. and sold for $166.97. Two red heifers averaged 1,258 lbs. and sold for an average price of $176.75. Matt Haney of Seaforth, consigned four heifers that averaged 1,403 lbs. and sold for $167.53. One gold heifer weighed 1,430 lbs. and sold for $172. There were 200 cows on offer. Export types sold $100 to $118 with sales to $125.50; beef, $110 to $120 with sales to $128; D1 and D2, $95 to $103; D3, $87 to $93; D4, $80 to $90. Brian Oldfield of Seaforth, consigned one charolais cow that weighed 1,910 lbs. and sold for $128. There were 13 bulls selling $114.50 to $143. Val Brook Farms Chepstow, consigned one limousin bull that weighed 1,950 lbs. and sold for $143. There were 220 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $135 to $190 with sales to $200; good holsteins, $123 to $130 with sales to $140; Si heavy holsteins, $115 to $125; heavy holsteins, $114 to $120; medium holsteins, $110 to $120. Farmers, consumers, academics and government joined the Government of Canada to discuss their views on what should be included in A Food Policy for Canada. Minister MacAulay first announced the development of a national food policy in early June. A Food Policy for Canada will set a long-term vision for the health, environmental, social, and economic goals related to food, while identifying actions that can be addressed in the short term. The federal government's consultation summit focused on four closely connected themes that have a direct impact on food — increasing access to affordable food; improving health and food safety; conserving our soil, water and air; and growing more high-quality food. Canadian farmers have a direct role in all four of these themes and that put representatives from the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) at the table for the Ottawa food summit.
