It's a good thing once in a while to
have a technical glitch in life, it
At the Branch
makes you appreciate all the times
things go right. So some of this
column, missed from last week, may
seem like old news, but here it is.
Lloyd and Helen will be smiling.
Their Grey Township barn has been
given new life in Brussels. Helen
[McCutcheon] and Lloyd Wheeler,
now in heaven, would have enjoyed
the people gathered by the barn [on
the 18th] chatting and laughing as
they watched Bryan Morton and
several workers figure the best way
to get the new windmill to stand.
It was a fun time, to recall stories
of old barns and windmills,
remember the people who made our
community a stable place and to
think to the future with hope and
excitement with all the possibilities.
Lloyd and Helen sold honey, and
several times that afternoon, as we
watched people milling about, I
thought about the calm manner of
the Wheelers, not Gerry, and their
bees — the workers, the queen and
the drones; we all have a place to be.

Comrade President Jamie Mitchell
attended his first Zone Council
meeting as the new president last
week. He said he enjoyed the
information and meeting new faces
in the Legion.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 13 tables of players at play.
Winners were: first, Norm and
Wayne, 79 points; second, Millie
and Lois, 74; third, Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 72;
low, Frank and Betty Hulley, 39;
lone hands, Shirley and Dianne,
The Sunday afternoon Brussels
Cemetery decoration service had
about the normal crowd of 30 people
including guests, Legion members
and the Pipe Band. Padre Sandra
Cable did a wonderful job as usual
and new president Jamie Mitchell
did a great job for his first formal
event. The setup was done in the
morning under threatening skies, but
the weather was perfect; not too hot
and dry for all. There were 18 names
read out as having passed during the
past year by Padre Sandra, as there
were no church representatives in
attendance. The Brussels Legion
Pipe Band played "Amazing Grace"

during the service and paraded and
played during the marching on and
off. The Brussels Cemetery looked
lovely as usual with many of the
tombstones brightly decorated with
bouquets of flowers. We thank the
cemetery staff for their assistance
and thank all who attended from as
far away as Stratford and area.
The Sunday night dance had the
great music of the John Heaman
Band play for a crowd of almost 90
people. They had a great time
dancing and enjoying the delicious
lunch. John Heaman has announced
his retirement from dance events but
will be at the Brussels Legion twice
more before he quits.
The 150th Canada Day draw is
this Saturday and members who
have tickets are asked to return them
this week and hopefully all are sold.
The Brussels Legion Branch will be
selling tickets at the Farmers'
Market this Friday if anyone needs
tickets. The fish fry starts at 5 p.m.
and the draw will be made at the end
of the evening meal.
Brussels Ministerial, will be July 17-
21 this year. So all your school-age
friends are welcome for a week of
fun and imagination. A skeleton is
part of the props — sounds exciting.
Camp Kintail staff supply the
content and volunteers help them in
many ways to give the kids a
learning experience. Registration
forms are at 5R's.
Summer is a gathering time.
Anniversaries, weddings, picnic,
reunions and parties are all available
for our attendance. Each one of these
brings certain emotions as memories
come with each occasion. For us it
was celebration parties for the fall
wedding of granddaughter Lindsay
Watson and Craig Marks and the
50th wedding anniversary party for
brother Bill and Pauline. A time to
celebrate the people we take for
granted, family, and recall their role
in our lives and be very thankful we
are a part of that bigger picture.
Summer is officially here, the
firefighters' breakfasts in Brussels
and Grey are but a pleasant memory
and once again we acknowledge the
community support, the time
commitment and the first aid and fire
knowledge offered to us by these
folks. Thank you.
The United Churches of Blyth and
Brussels will not be offering worship
services in July. Hillary MacDonald
will be out and about looking for you
to introduce yourself. It's holiday
time, take a break or visit a nearby
service.
The accumulated rain of between
four and six inches of last week has
receded, but was a marvel to watch.
Get your red and white duds out;
Canada Day needs to be celebrated.
We have a lot to celebrate.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
