Young people at church meeting a welcome sight A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Another month of 2017 has passed us by. Hope you made it memorable. Memories are in the minds of the Kellington kids this week as they remember their growing up life with Bill and Gertie in Brussels. Dad, Bill has handled the end stages of life at Huronlea for the past few years and died last week. So, smile Kellington clan as you think of the good times. The Horticultural Society folks were out and about this past week — getting the big pots and boxes ready for Turnberry Street and then getting them all planted for the enjoyment and beautification of the village. Thanks to the Huron East folks (Rick) for being such nice helpers, especially the lifting parts. The last weekend of May is often church weekend for me with about 300 other United Church folk this 1 St. Johns A NR..1 I( A :N SUNDAY WORSHIP 11:15a .m. YARD & BAKE SALE FOOD BOOTH SAT MAY 27 TAM - 2PM EVERYONE W MAW Finding the deals The village of Brussels was busy on Saturday morning with yard sales throughout the village and surrounding areas. St. John's Anglican Church was no exception, with a fundraising yard sale and food booth serving food throughout the morning and early afternoon. (Denny Scott photo) time. Seeing the church move is a joy. Like many established institutions in our history, the church held ground by maintaining beautiful buildings, worshipping in traditional styles and sending money to "fix the world". The world changes and if church is to remain relevant in this new world, adaptations are needed. Open minds, ears that listen, education, challenges and reassurance are all required and were all available on the weekend. Ryan McMahon, a Canadian comedian and actors was our theme speaker. His place in our agenda was his clear and real insight of a family history of four generations of residential school survivors. I could listen to him several more times to grasp what we need to do to help make things equal in our province. The thrill for me was the number of young people ready to lead the church on this unknown path. Names were confirmed for next year's general council with Kathy Douglas as well as Ian, Jack and Sarah taking our realities to the top meeting of our denomination. We are blessed. By reports I hear the sales on the weekend went well. A nice way to give things a better life, find new space and prolong the life of our landfill. Everybody wins. I hope you have your ticket for the At the Branch McDonald attends Provincial convention By Jo -Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch started with the final meeting of the 2016/2017 year of the Legion. A new president, Comrade Sharon McKeown, the first woman for Ontario Command, was elected. District C is proud to have Comrade Derek Moore re-elected as a vice- president of Ontario Command. An unknown fact to many in the communities in Ontario, is the generosity of the members of the Royal Canadian Legions across the province and the country. Donations were given to the Charitable Foundation which considers applications for medical equipment and research funding and approves grants to community medical facilities and organizations across the province. Our own Brussels Fire Department has been a recipient of a grant from the Charitable Foundation of the Royal Canadian Legion. At the convention $132,000 was donated to the Foundation committee.
