Africa are now essentially "laid at
our gate". The question is not
whether we are able to assist them;
the question is, will we (before it is
too late)?
These 20 million are not just
faceless torsos. Each one has a name
and a face. In Jesus' story, one
interesting feature is that we never
find out the name of the rich man;
but Jesus does tell us the name of the
poor beggar covered with sores -
"Lazarus" (ironically means "God
has helped").
Those starving Biafrans had
names and faces, too. In 1981, I
served as interim director for four
months at a farm for the blind near
Owerri in southeast Nigeria run by
Christian Blind Mission. This was

The Blyth Festival Art Gallery's
Student Show 2017 will launch the
gallery's 42nd season of exhibitions.
Beginning on Thursday, May 25,
creations by Huron and Perth
County secondary school art
students will fill the Bainton Gallery.
This annual celebration of student
creativity will feature the best works
of art students in Grades 9-12. Many
different artistic techniques will be
featured including mixed media,
sculpture, photography, drawing,
painting, printmaking and digital
illustration.
Over the past 25 years, art teachers
from the Avon Maitland District
School Board and the Huron Perth
Catholic School Board have
encouraged student participation in
the annual Student Show. Each year,
the artworks are properly mounted
or framed for the show, teaching the
students the value of professional
presentation.
Five Awards of Excellence will be
presented to outstanding student
artists through the show, reinforcing
the sense of their artwork being
valued by both the attendance and
appreciation of the viewers as well
as the giving of cash prizes for
excellence. The exhibition and prize
winners will be featured in local
media articles and social media.
The Student Show 2017 is
presented by the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery and sponsored by Paul and
Mary Carroll. Bruce Stainton will
curate this exhibition of exciting art,
full of youthful energy and creative
ideas.
isn't simple: Dow
right in the former Biafra. My "right
hand man" responsible for daily
running of the farm, where a dozen
blind individuals were taught helpful
life skills, was a talented, huskily -
built fellow named Madumere. He
showed great initiative in developing
new techniques and equipment that
would help the residents. Some time
later I would learn that Madumere
had served as a captain in the
Biafran army. He had now redirected
his skills, formerly used in civil war,
into peaceful avenues for saving
lives rather than destroying them.
The solution to the "largest
humanitarian crisis since 1945" is no
doubt not simple. It will necessitate
the best efforts of world leaders to
address root causes of conflict,
drought, poverty and global
inaction. But we as ordinary citizens
all have our part to play as well, if
tragedy on a massive scale is to be
averted. Like the beggar Lazarus,
those whose lives are at risk do all
have names and faces!
