Benches
coming
for park
Continued from page 9
dampness would result in the
benches leaving black and green
marks on people. It does need
work."
Administrator Clerk -Treasurer
Nancy Michie said the park had
seen less use as of recently in her
experience.
"Families have used the park for
wedding and family photos, but
haven't for the past few years due to
the condition of the park"
Councillor Jim Nelemans asked if
the park saw use and Alcock said he
couldn't provide a firm answer.
"I'm not there often," he said.
"But when I did look, there was
garbage in the garbage cans and
evidence of people using the site.
When we were there, however, it
was during the working day, when
there would be few people using the
park."
Nelemans wondered if the
benches could be memorial projects,
having people donate to have the
benches placed in memory of
individuals.
Councillor Dorothy Kelly pointed
out that the walkway was already
made in such a way, with bricks
dedicated to individuals, however
Nelemans didn't think that would
stop people from donating.
Mayor Paul Gowing said there
had been some discussion around
the project prior to the meeting,
saying that funds for the project
could be provided by the Latimer
estate, a fund earmarked for projects
within the municipality.
He also said that if the benches are
custom-made, they could be used as
part of the municipality's display for
the International Plowing Match,
showing off the municipality as well
as a local producer.
"We could have the emblem of the
1978 International Plowing Match
or the municipality's emblem," he
said. "We wouldn't try and push
them as an item for sale, but it could
show what our local producers are
capable of."
Deputy -Reeve Jamie Heffer asked
how much was available through the
Latimer estate and was told $30,000
was available.
Heffer suggested that four of the
custom benches be made, one for
each of the public parks in the
municipality (Belgrave, Turnberry
Park, Bluevale Park and the park on
County Road 86) and the rest of the
benches be refurbished with
composite wood.
Council agreed, stating that each
custom-made bench would feature
an emblem or scene. Heffer's
motion, and most of the rest of the
suggestions from Alcock's report,
were carried.
The trellis, however, proved to be
a sticking point for the discussion as
the structure was placed in memory
of two former residents of the
municipality.
It was decided the family that
placed the trellis would be contacted
before action was taken to either
replace or reinforce it.
