Huron 4-H IPM Club holds first meeting in Clinton
A history lesson
Don Dodds, who has been to an International Plowing Match or two in his time, is serving as
a leader for the Huron County 4-H IPM Club, but also as its resident historian. He spoke to the
group at its first meeting in late April and told them about the historic matches that Huron
County has hosted over the years, including the 1966 mud match, the dust match in 1999 and
the money match in Wingham in 1978. (Photo submitted)
By Jessalyn Hendriks
The first meeting of the Huron
County 4-H IPM Club was held at
the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA)
office in Clinton at 7 p.m. on April
26. Once everyone arrived, members
went outside to play a game/roll call
with a beach ball with questions on
it like "how many 4-H clubs have
you done?" and "what is your
favourite animal?"
When members went back inside,
they introduced themselves and said
what clubs they are in. The club then
had elections. The new president is
Brooklyn Hendriks; vice-president,
Megan Metske, press reporter and
secretary will rotate; treasurer,
Austin Bieman; attendance recorder,
Alycia Coultes; cover designer,
Emily Bieman and youth leaders are
Brooklyn Hendriks and Drew
Terpstra. Leaders include Jolande
Oudshoorn, Marita Oudshoorn,
Ursina Studhalter, Monique Baan,
Reg Vinnicombe and Don Dodds.
Members also found out that
leader Ursina Studhalter was a
Huron County Queen of the Furrow
in 2014.
Don Dodds then described some
of the past plowing matches that
were held in the area. He had a lot of

The weather has turned better and
there are a few happier faces on the
farmers. Corn is being planted in the
fields that are ready and the
weatherman has predicted good
weather for the next week. I hope
that is the case.
Returning from a family trip to
England are Bill and Peggy
Aitcheson. They, along with
daughters MaryAnn and friend Mike
Hoskins and Kate and friend Ben
Luotsma, went to Sussex to attend
the nuptials of their daughter and
sister Colleen to Jack Willis. The
couple met while Colleen was in
Australia and after her return, she
went to England and now she's
married. Congratulations to the
newlyweds and the Aitcheson
family.
We are happy to hear Eileen
Sellers is enjoying her move to
Wingham. She is out and about and
seeing her husband at Braemar and
her friends around Wingham.
Wingham also gained Fran
Breckinridge as a new resident. She
is busy doing some work around the
house and we wish her well in her
new place.

stories such as Wingham's IPM
(1978) which was known as the
"money match"; Port Albert (1946),
"victory match"; Seaforth (1966),
"mud match" and Dashwood (1999),
"the dust match". He had a lot of
interesting stories and memories.
The club is organizing a tent
display at the IPM 2017 in Walton.
The plan is to fill the tent with lots of
games and information about
4-H and agriculture. The club name
will be the 4-H IPM County
Plowers. For the final project,
members can either do the
Auctioneers' Challenge, the 4-H
Beautification contest or Brussels
Fall Fair. Members then had
watermelon and juice for their
snack. Their next meeting was held
on May 10 at the OMAFRA office.
Members are encouraged to sell
bows for the IPM to fundraise to
purchase matching shirts to wear
when at the display at the plowing
match.
