Pushing through
The Western Ontario Secondary Student Athletics
Association (WOSSAA) track and field event will be filled
with stiff competition if F.E. Madill Secondary School's track
and field team have anything to say about it. Students
earned their way to the event through wins at the Huron -
Perth championship earlier this month. Above, BreIle Shaw

Clugston tops senior golf day
By Kassidy Martin
The Wingham Golf and Country
Club had a very busy week getting
things ready for this upcoming golf
season. On Friday, May 5, the club
hosted its first wing night of the
summer. There were over 140
people out to enjoy the Friday
night wing night with friends and
family. Over 1,200 wings were
served.
To start the week off, there was a
fundraiser at the Clinton Casino. The
65 golfers and curlers had a very
good night and said that the food
was delicious.
The Wednesday morning seniors
had 13 golfers out on a beautiful
sunny morning. Results were: first,
Hugh Clugston, 34; second, Doug
Vanderwoude, 34; third, Carl Good,
35; low, Terry Walker, 40; closest -to -
the -pin, Wayne Elston. Terry Walker
got the first place longest putt award
and Hugh Clugston, second. The
golfers played nine holes and then
enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich
lunch in the golfer's lounge.
The Thursday night men had 51
dedicated golfers come out to enjoy
a sunny evening on the course
followed by a delicious dinner.
Results were: low, Steve Nixon and
Don Edgar, 41; closest -to -the -pin,
Brett Sangster, Lorne Millen and
Corey Hayter; longest putt, John
Dybes, Jeff Lockridge and Ross
Gibson; hidden scores, Leighton
Lynch, 42 and Russ Danbrook, 52.
The club's first Thursday men's
night was held April 27 with 38
golfers hitting the links on a
beautiful golf night. Low gross score
went to Don Edgar who shot a 36.
The closest -to -the -pin winners were
Scott Helder, Jay Marston and Don
Edgar. The longest -putt winners

London. From WOSSAA, the top
six in each event earn the right to
compete at OFSAA West Regionals
to be held at the same venue as
WOSSAA. From OFSAA West
Regionals, the top four in each
event qualify for OFSAA to be held
in Belleville.
Madill had also co -hosted an
invitational track and field meet at
St. Anne's last week.
Attended by 23 schools, the
athletes battled heavy rain and
frigid temperatures throughout the
day.
Despite the unfavourable weather
conditions, Madill athletes rose to
the challenge achieving 16 personal
best performances and 58 top six
finishes.
Jacklin heaved the shot a
remarkable 16.10 metres to miss the
school record set by Charlie Meiers
in the early 1980s by just one
centimetre.
The Grade 7 and 8 contingent of
Madill athletes joined the high
school athletes and competed
against their peers from other
schools. They too collected several
top finishes.

were Ron McDowell, Brett Sangster
and Dan McPherson. There were no
hidden scores for the first Thursday
night men's night. Unfortunately the
first Tuesday ladies day was a
washout.
The first Wednesday senior's day
was held on May 4 and there were
18 golfers out on a great morning for
golf. Dan Benoit took home first
place; Ross Peacock, second and
Brian Carr, third. There were no
winners for closest to the pin. Brian
Carr was the golfer who sunk the
longest putt.
Just a reminder to members
that opening day is set for Monday,
May 22.
