Madill Secondary School track and field athletes competed at the Huron -Perth Championships held last week at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School in Clinton and as a result, more than 30 are heading to the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (WOSSAA) meet later this month. After enduring cold, wet meets, the athletes seized the opportunity provided by warmer, sunny weather, to perform well. It was an outstanding two days with the small but mighty Madill squad earning 35 personal bests as well as three relay team bests. By the meet's end, when results were tallied, Madill athletes had broken five Huron -Perth records, set two Madill benchmarks, won two individual championships, one team championship and placed a strong second in Midget Girls, Senior Girls, Overall Girls, Overall Boys, and Overall Team bowing to a larger team from St. Anne's, which won overall. As a result of the meet, 31 Madill athletes advance to the upcoming WOSSAA event. In the Midget Girls division, Megan Ash sprinted cleanly over the hurdles to win first and second in the 300 -metre hurdles and 80 -metre hurdles respectively. Teammate Jaime Newell outran the opposition in the 100 -metre making for an exciting first place finish. Distance runner Brooke Jez had some outstanding performances. In her first event on day one, she crushed the 1,500 -metre record taking 16 seconds off the former time. Winning all three distance races is not an easy feat but Jez was able to win both the 800 -metre and 3,000 -metre alongside the record she set in the 1,500 -metre. With three first place finishes, she laid claim to the individual Midget Girls title. The Madill Junior Girls made their presence felt in the jumping pits. Emma Jackson, Jaime Newell, Hannah Bloemberg and Megan Ash all earned top finishes in long and triple jump. In the throwing events, Madill athletes once again fared well. Breelle Shaw put the shot 8.8 metres to earn second place. In the discus circle, Hanna VanStuyvenberg set a new Huron -Perth record with an outstanding personal best throw of 27.31 metres. The Midget Girls wrapped up the first day of Huron -Perth with an impressive 4x100 -metre relay race. Megan Ash, Emma Jackson, Jaime Newell and Hannah Bloemberg connected smoothly with their baton passes to set a new personal best time of 54.51 seconds and win second place. The Madill Midget Girls won second overall in points missing by a very small margin to St. Anne's. In the junior girls division, the throwing duo of Christina Schraa and Carly Frank had top finishes and personal bests in both shot put and discus. On the track, team mate Jordyn Stuzman earned two third place finishes in the sprint and distance hurdles. In the Senior Girls division, the throwing squad of Taylor Montgomery, Sydney Wightman, Katie Murray and Jasmine Vader collected several top place finishes and became WOSSAA qualifiers in several throwing events. Taylor Montgomery led the way with a first place finish in shot put (9.15 metres) and second place in discus (27.25). Teammate Sydney Wightman hurled the discus 29.13 metres to win the event. Jessica Johnston, competing as a first year senior, looked strong in all three of her events (high jump, sprint hurdles, distance hurdles). The Madill Senior Girls wrapped up the first day of competition running the 4x100 -metres relay in their best time so far this season (54.42 seconds). The team also earned a second place overall finish among the 11 Huron -Perth schools. In his first time at a Huron -Perth Championship, Ryan Jacklin (Midget Boys division) had some impressive results. In the three throws, shot put, discus and javelin, he not only won first place, but set new Huron -Perth records in all three events (shot put 15.93 metres, discus 46.52 metres and javelin 49.88 metres). His distances bode well for an exciting season ahead as he continues to set his sights to climb the competitive ladder of WOSSAA, Regionals, and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) event later this year. Jacklin won the Midget Boys individual Huron -Perth title with his three first place finishes. In the Junior Boys division, Austin Eadie earned first in long jump leaping 5.56 metres. In triple jump he set a new personal best of 12.19 metres. In high jump, Eadie cleared the bar at 1.60 metres to earn second place. In Senior Boys, it was a true team effort with points being earned in throws, sprints, jumps and distance. The boys earned enough points to win the division championship. Matt Darrell won the long jump (6.04 metres) and leaped 12.10 metres in triple jump to win second place. On the track he had his fastest time this season in the 400 -metre rounding the oval in 52.20 seconds for second place. Teammate Mitch Deans burned up the track winning the 100 metres in 11.68 seconds and claiming second in the 200 -metre (24.69 seconds). Deans also leaped to a second place finish in long jump. Between them, the distance running duo of Brandon Murray and Michael Schraa earned plenty of points in the steeplechase, 800-, 1,500- and 3,000 -metres, qualifying for WOSSAA in each of these events. In the throwing events, Mitch Ward hurled the discus to a second place finish and qualified in all three throws for WOSSAA.
