PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO
Night of service
The Londesboro and District Lions Club held its annual fish fry on Saturday night. The meal is
the club's biggest fundraiser of the year and brought nearly 650 people to the village for dinner
that night. While the local Lions Club was busy with getting meals out to diners in a timely
fashion, it was the crew from the Brussels Legion that made its way to the Central Huron
community to cook fish and fries. From left: Dan Beyersbergen, Sandra Josling, Catrina

A big challenge
Stacey Hummel, left, and sister Tracy Hiusser, of the
Londesborough area and Clinton respectively, are taking on
the Southern Ontario Amazing Race (SOAR) June 3 and 4.
The two were looking for a challenge and stumbled on the
fundraiser. (Denny Scott photo)
Londesborough -area resident
Stacey Hummel and her sister Tracy
Hiusser from Clinton will be
participating in the Southern Ontario
Amazing Race (SOAR) later this
year and are looking for some local
support.
"We considered doing it last year,"
Stacey said. "We were looking for an
adventure race and we found this
one that is a fundraiser for the
Children's Foundation of Guelph
and Wellington."
The two have been involved in
several different exciting activities
over the past few years including the
Tough Mudder run and rafting in
Honduras and were looking for
something close to home but
exciting to try.
"It's like a live-action Amazing
Race like on television, but we really
have no idea what it's going to
entail," Stacey said. "We're given
the location of the starting line, and
it's all clue -based from there"
The competition stretches across
all of southwestern Ontario and has
had events take place in Stratford,
Orangeville, Brampton and, of
course, Guelph.
The two have raised more than
$2,000 of their $3,000 goal.
The race runs June 3-4 and is
recorded and the two have been
watching videos of the past races to
see what kind of events they may
face, but the competitions are so
varied, it's difficult to plan ahead.
"It's so varied, and it's been
running since 2004, so it's hard to
plan for it," Stacey said.
"There's no information about this
year's race, so it's difficult to
prepare," Tracy said. "It can be
anything from zip lining to
crossword puzzles, or performing a
song to sudoku. We really don't
know what to expect."
The two are glad to be working for
the foundation, which supports four
main programs.
"They have the Food and Friends
program, which looks to support
children as a whole by providing not
just breakfasts but a chance for
children to socialize," Stacey
explained. "They have the Free to
Play project, which funds sports,
dance or other activities for children.
The Adopt -a -Family program which
matches donors with families that
need help around Christmas. It's not
just gifts, but they provide all kinds
of things the family needs"
The fourth pillar of the program is
scholarships, helping young people
pursue educations.
The two are also thinking of
running a similar event in Huron
County but are waiting to experience
SOAR before they start planning for
it.
"We're going to scope it out in the
Guelph area and see if it would
work," Tracy said. "The only money
made is through donations and
everyone involved is volunteer so
you have to have a strong base to
make it work."

Two babies started their faith
journey at Londesborough United
Church Sunday, May 14. Alicia
Grace, daughter of Brent and Jenny
Radford, and Timothy Edwin
William, son of Dave and Erica
Baxter were presented for baptism
that Mother's Day morning.
Flowers on the memorial stand
were placed in memory of Amy
Bosman by her parents, Allan and
Barb. Flowers on the organ were
from Peter and Sherry Postma. The
sanctuary was nicely decorated for
the special day with many motherly
things, special plates, cups and
saucers, vases, etc.
As a special treat the men of the
senior choir sang two anthems, "On
the Wings of a Dove" and "We Will
Understand It Better in the Sweet
By and By".
"Strong Love" was the title of the
message by Rev. Fletcher. His
supporting scripture readings were
Ephesians 5:25-33 and 6: 1-4,
passages which give directions to all
members of a family on how to love
one another. Psalm 25 was the
responsive psalm.
All God's creatures demonstrate
family love. Sometimes that love
transcends barriers and sometimes
develops in odd situations/ways. But
love instinctively reaches out to be
expressed and bonds form. Terry
reminded congregants that God
loves all of us as a mother loves her
children.
At the end of the service the
Sunday School children presented
all the women with an Impatiens
FROM LONDESBORO
flower they had planted .
Members of the official board are
reminded of their meeting on May
30 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the Swiss Chalet take-
out dinner on June 7 must be
purchased by May 31. The Sunday
School will hold their promotion
and award service on June 4.
The building which long-time
residents will recall being called the
township shed and now owned by
Radford's Farm Equipment has a
new occupant. Side Street Antiques,
formerly of Clinton, has moved in.
