Madill Secondary School's rugby squad brought home the Matthew Dinning Memorial Cup for the first time in four years last week. Madill started off the tournament with a big win over host team St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School. The tournament was held at St. Anne's this year because the Madill fields are currently under construction, but the home field advantage didn't help the hosts as Madill bested them 15-0. The Mustangs next faced off against Saugeen District Secondary School. Despite being evenly matched according to Madill Coach Lee Ann McDonald, Madill was able to pull ahead in the dying minutes of the game, breaking a scoreless stalemate and earning a 10-0 win over Saugeen. Madill faced off against St. Michael Catholic Secondary School from Stratford in the final of the tournament which was ominous for the squad. The opposing team from Stratford had beat Madill in regular play earlier in the month and were the defending champions for the tournament. It took nearly the full half for Madill to gain an edge, earning a try just prior to it ending. After a hard- fought second half, Madill came out ahead 17-0. Saugeen District took the consolation championships. Colton Metske was named most valuable player for Madill. The tournament is in honour of Cpl. Matthew Dinning who was Cyclists use ride to highlight safety issues By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen A group of motivated cyclists is hoping to open up dialogue with Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson on issues facing cyclists and they're doing so on the road. Con Melady is a member of the group that helped craft the Huron County cycling strategy and he is spearheading this initiative. The ride will take place in Clinton and it will be a casual tour of the town that will last about 30 minutes. The ride is set for Saturday, June 3 and it will depart at 9 a.m. It is part of the Clinton Spring Fair activities being held all weekend. Discussion surrounding the event began in December when the idea was pitched to Thompson. Melady said that he and the other organizers of the event had hoped to piggyback onto one of the many Huron County events being held in June, which is Bike Month at the provincial level. There is no pre -registration for the ride, cyclists are simply encouraged to show up for the ride in Clinton, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the fairgrounds. killed in Afghanistan over 10 years ago. "Matthew was a key member of the rugby team while a student at F.E. Madill and this is our way of honouring him," said McDonald. "Lincoln and Laurie Dinning [Matthew's parents] attend the event and present the championship plaques each year.
