gazebo. The playground, gazebo and
splash pad were all set to be funded
in this year's budget through a
combination of fundraising and
reserves, while Jewitt said he felt the
skate park was stalled due to
fundraising requirements and was
being forgotten by council.
He felt it was unfair to those who
took the initiative to come to council
and propose this project, but were
then being lapped by other aspects
of the project that came later that
council had chosen to support with
hundreds of thousands from
reserves.
In addition, after crunching the
numbers, Director of Finance Terri
Rau said that by her estimates it
would only cost an additional
$40,000 or so to get the park to
where it needs to be. That includes a
private donation of $50,000 and
Central Huron contributions of
$30,000 in both 2016 and 2017 for a
total of $110,000.
Some councillors, however, said
they felt that the skateboard park
was too advanced for the
community park and a cheaper
alternative could be found if the
group can't achieve its fundraising
goal on its own.
Councillor Dan Colquhoun said
he felt that the skateboard park, with
its cemented -in elements, rather
than a cheaper, modular design, was
the "Cadillac" version of a
skateboard park that shouldn't be
approved if the group can't afford it.
Jewitt agreed that the version
approved by the skateboard park
committee was more advanced, but
said that was the version that those
consulted, including youth who
would use the park, felt would be
used more and would last longer.

"At some point you need to invest
in your community," Jewitt said of
the park. He also commended the
group for having the initiative to
come up with an idea and work on it
themselves. Jewitt said he would
hate to discourage citizens from
putting in that kind of work and
being leaders within their own
community.
At council's March 6 meeting, a
joint tender from Lavis Contracting
and A.B.C. Recreation was
approved for the construction of the
splash pad and accessibility
upgrades for a total of $283,932.68
plus HST, which was over $120,000
more than had been budgetted. The
balance of the funds was to be paid
from the Erie -Thames (ERTH)
Fund. With the playground already
set to be funded, that left the
skateboard park as the only aspect
of the park not ready to go ahead.
No formal decision was made at
the March 28 meeting, but the issue
will be discussed further at council's
final budget meeting, which is set
for Tuesday, April 18 at 5 p.m. in
Clinton.
