Village mourns loss of long-time resident From Marilyn's Desk Conducting himself well Silas Elligson, assisted by his mother Allison, made a presentation about one of his passions, trains, to his peers at the Huron Ontario Early Years Group at the Blyth and District Community Centre on March 21. (Denny Scott photo) Blyth UcWplanning Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on the fourth Sunday of Lent were Lavern Clark and Marilyn Craig. Ushering were Lavern Clark and Emily Phillips. Marilyn Scott was organist and Katie Dockstader, choir director. Fred Hakkers ran the Power Point. John Stewart welcomed everyone to church and reminded everyone that the Good Friday service on April 14 is at 11 a.m. Gwen Papple asked the congregation if they were interested in making crafts or donating yarns, sewing supplies or any craft supplies that they no longer have a use for. The UCW would be glad to accept them as they are planning a craft sale in the near future (instead of Women's Day Out) and could put them to use. They are going to have a couple of days for craft -making in May and June and invite those interested to come out and enjoy the fellowship. If you are interested, call Gwen Papple at 519-525-3881. The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Rev. Gary Clark had a box of candy canes and asked the children if they knew what the shape of the cane meant. The candy canes are made in the shape of a "J" and also they are like a shepherd's crook. A shepherd can use it for retrieving one of his sheep if they fall over a cliff. Jesus is the shepherd and we are His sheep. Jesus loves us just like the shepherd loves his sheep. When we see a candy cane we can remember how much Jesus loves us. Rev. Clark's message to the congregation was "Hearing the Truth Hurts". When we hear the truth it often hurts and isn't well received. The scriptures tell of Jesus telling His disciples the truth that one of them will deny knowing him and one will betray Him. Peter tells Jesus that he will not deny Him and that he is ready to fight for Him. Jesus tells Peter he will deny Him three times before the cock crows. In the scriptures, Jesus is trying to prepare His disciples for what is about to happen. Jesus tells them that the shepherd will be killed and that the sheep will scatter. Sometimes we can see ourselves in the scriptures. Let's help each other by telling the truth. It is a good thing to teach our children to pray. Jesus takes His three favourite disciples with Him and goes up the mountain to ask God to take this cup away. When He comes back to where He left His disciples they have fallen asleep. Jesus does this three times before He has the strength to face what is going to happen to Him. In the truth we find healing. The next hymn "Jesus Lover of My Soul" was sung. The offering was received followed by the singing of the offertory response, "Grant Us God the Grace", the offertory prayer, the prayers for the people, silent prayers and the singing of the Lord's Prayer. The last hymn, "Take Time to be Holy" was He who counts the stars! (Charles Spurgeon) "He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds. He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!" Psalm 147:3-5 He who counts the stars and calls them by their names, is in no danger of forgetting His own children! He knows your case as thoroughly as if you were the only creature He ever made, or the only saint He ever loved! It is most important for us to learn, that the smallest trifles are as much arranged by the God of Providence, as the most startling events. He who counts the stars --has also numbered the hairs of our heads. Our lives and deaths are predestined --but so, also, are our sitting down and our rising up! "Are not tow sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered!" Matthew 10:29-30 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 craft sale sung followed by the benediction and the singing of the response, "0 Jesus I Have Promised". FROM BLYTH By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 The village was saddened again this week with the death of life-long Blyth resident, Ed Watson, who passed away on Saturday. Our sympathy is extended to Joan and family and also to Ed's brother and sister and their families. Happy birthday to Matt and Aaron Popp who celebrate March 30; Carla Pawitch, April 3; Adeline Campbell (Huronlea, Brussels) and John Stadelmann, April 5. Boy! What a foggy wet morning. A good day to stay inside and get some of that spring cleaning done. Our snow is gone but the cool weather and the March winds still persist. Will March go out like a lamb or a lion? I guess we will know on Friday of this week. Welcome back to our snow birds. Many of those who went south in the fall missed a pretty easy winter although the temperature was up and down which isn't really healthy for us. I hope you have brought with you the sunny and warm weather.
