The Citizen, 2017-03-23, Page 9Curling club looks to future with planning Continued from page 8 vice-president for the club. President for the next year is Don Chesher. The financial report was given by Susan Alexander. Jeff questioned whether there would be any adverse reason to raising the dues next year if the expenses rise and all agreed to an increase. Gary Pipe also thought some strategic planning should be put in place to encourage the future of the club. It was moved that Gary head a committee to brainstorm ideas to bring forward. Ideas suggested included getting children interested, having a booth at the fall fair, new curlers night instruction and others. The final banquet and prize presentation will be March 24 with social at 6 p.m. and a pot luck meal to follow. In years gone by, the Brussels Curling Club would host up to five bonspiels a year. With less members and rising costs, the Brussels Club now hosts one mixed spiel. Thanks to the efforts of club member Steve Knight, his hard work, and the great committee he has built, the March mixed spiel has become a popular and well run bonspiel. There were 20 teams participating in the spiel and some teams even turned away because it was full. Last Saturday, the 20 teams took the ice for a great day of curling on very good ice. Many teams had not curled on arena ice and were impressed on how good it was. Thanks to Abby and her crew for their efforts in creating the good ice and club members Mery Bauer, Carman Bernard, Steve Knight and Reg Vinnicombe for their all -day efforts to pebble, nip and sweep the ice to keep it in good shape. The food committee of Jo -Ann McDonald, Jane Zwep, Donna Bauer, Dona Knight, Mary Bernard, Marni Knight and all the club members provided the delicious fare. The prize committee of Carman and Mary Bernard, Jeff Cardiff, MaryAnn Thompson, Steve Knight, Dona Knight and Jo -Ann McDonald gathered the prizes and the bartenders Donna and Mery Bauer, and Lindsay and Lexi all helped with the decorating. The scorekeepers of Gary Pipe, Steve Knight, Marni Knight and Steve Steiss also helped make the day run smoothly. There were 20 teams participating from Brussels, Mitchell, Palmerston, St. Catharines, Listowel, Seaforth, Vanastra, Goderich and Ilderton. The first draw had the team of Rick McDonald win the draw with 48.25 points. Second place team of Janet McLean had 42.75 points and third place was team Deb Coultes with 37 points. Fourth was George Zwep with 36.5, fifth Judy DeJong with 35.5, sixth LeeAnn McDonald with 25, seventh Matthew Cardiff with 20.75, eighth Kriss Snell with 18, ninth Mark Bancroft with 11 and tenth place was Danica Zwep with 9.75 points.
