Local annual meetings allow groups to focus on goals

It's a winter wonderland out there
as I work at this column -sparkling
white ground cover, clear crisp air
and almost sunshine. Beautiful.
These are the winter days I really
enjoy. This kind of day is almost
enough to blur the snow squalls, the
green grass and the rain of last week.
No wonder we spend so much time
chatting about the weather.
The days of January are nearly
history, one of the months that has
little merit of its own. A few good
birthdays, the after-effects of
Christmas and the anticipation of
spring make the days of January pass
quickly.
We attended a fun wedding in
Kitchener on Saturday. Ralph's
brother John with Wendy enjoyed
the company of family and friends as
daughter Christine married Trevor
A thoughtful dinner
JR's Gas Bar and Family Restaurant hosted an Indian dinner for the Brussels Lions on Jan.
23 and donated proceeds from the dinner to the club. Lion and JR's owner Kamran Zafar,
right, presented a cheque of $510 to Brussels Lions President Cora Alcock. (Photo submitted)
At the Branch
Future Branch fundraisers
discussed at Jan. meeting
The week began with the General
Meeting for January. There were 11
comrades in attendance. There was
quite a bit of business to attend to.
The correspondence included
notice of the upcoming meeting
including presidents' meeting, zone
convention, district convention and
provincial conventions in February,
March, April and May.
In the membership department,
there have been some late notices
sent out to comrades, with many
dropping into the Branch to renew.
The district round of sports events
begins this week and Brussels had
teams competing in dart
competitions only. Discussion was
held about upcoming fundraising
including meat draws for February
and March, a 150 Canada draw,
trivia night, meals, fish fry menus as
well as other suggestions.
Honours and Awards afternoon is
being planned for the end of
February. A newsletter will be out
soon with volunteer lists, upcoming
dates and news around the
Branch.
A visit from a training officer of
the Cadet Corp informed the Branch
of what the Corp is planning. It also
addressed any concerns between the
Branch and Corp.
The Thursday night dart league
had eight darters enjoy the night.
The first place pair was Marlene
Rutledge and Roger McHardy.
Second place went to Sandra Josling
and Jamie Mitchell. The high shot of
the night was Sandra hitting 121.
The second skunk of the season was
by Penny Reynolds and Wayne
Smith.

Valentine's Meat Draws
and Wing Night
Saturday, February 11
from 5-9 pm
8 draws including a Mega Meat Draw
Middleton at the Westmount Golf
Club.
Weddings are each unique and
when the personalities of the
newlyweds shine it's a good day.
The ceremony was fun; theatre folk
can bring the best out of life. Many
of the guests have been in shows
with Christine over the years in
Cambridge, Kitchener, Grand Bend
to name a few. So, energy filled the
space.
My favourite things were obvious:
hot chocolate went along with the
usual drinks available at the
reception, popcorn was ready later
for a snack and ginger cookies were
the take home treat. Getting to know
Rose and Lou, the Belgium team
that offered rides through the golf
course made it a very Christine and
Trevor time. Shades of Alma and
Carson could be seen as the day
unfolded. So a wedding in January is
a good thing, especially with fun and
family.
Annual meetings are taking place,
a time to review and dream. A time
to see what is relevant and what
needs to retire. Each organization
has a goal and often in the business
of business the goal can get hidden
so it's always a good thing to go
back and make sure we are all in this
for the same reasons. It can be a
surprise. This is also a good time of
year to check out the organizations
