The Citizen, 2017-01-26, Page 15THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2017. PAGE 15. Belgrave church hosts Epiphany 3 Sunday service Minister Brian Hymers welcomed the congregation on Jan. 22 — Epiphany 3. He lit the Christ Candle. The small flame on the top of the candle is enough light to illuminate all the darkness in our human lives. After the welcoming hymn, "The Church's One Foundation" was sung, Brian went over the announcements as printed. On Sunday, Jan. 29 there is lunch after church. Please bring sandwiches or dessert. The annual meeting is to follow. The annual reports are ready for pick-up. Please remember to bring your report to the annual meeting. Thanks and good wishes were received from Jackie as she continues to recover from her surgery. Please continue to save your milk bags to be used to make sleeping mats. In the call to worship, the scripture tells us in the words of the Prophet Isaiah 9: 2 and again in Matthew 4: 16. The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light; those who live in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. After the choir anthem, the children's hymn was "Small Things Count" accompanied by MacKenzie Wightman. We listened to the Word of God as Pat Barnes read scripture from 1 Corinthians: 10-18 and Matthew 4: 12-23 and Psalm 27 responsive with the congregation. The hymn of response was "Let There Be Light". The offering was taken up and dedicated. The closing hymn, "Fairest Lord Jesus", the benediction and blessing, "Go Now in Peace" concluded the morning service. The community extends birthday greetings to Roy Taylor on his 65th birthday. WMS host annual meeting at St. Andrew's, Wingham A new year The Women's Missionary Society held its annual meeting of the Maitland Presbyterial last week at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Wingham where a new executive was installed. From left: Judy Watt, corresponding secretary; Nancy Maclntyre, past co -president; Betty Johnston, past co -president; Mary Simmons, president; Mae Raynard, adult secretary; Lorraine Clugston, vice-president and publicity secretary, Donna Sutton, historian; Evelyn Dickson, treasurer and Norma Raynard, recording secretary. Absent was Kathy Howard, Glad Tidings secretary. (Photo submitted) By Lorraine Clugston "Truth and Reconciliation" was the theme for the Women's Missionary Society annual meeting of the Maitland Presbyterial on Monday, Jan. 16 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Wingham. President Mary Simmons constituted the meeting and Karen Webster, president of the Wingham WMS, welcomed the women. Mae Raynard and Mary Simmons led in "The Blanket Exercise" where everyone started out with a blanket of their own to stand on. This represented the indigenous people of North America or "Turtle Island" before the Europeans arrived. It traced the history of the indigenous people and non - indigenous people as they interacted through history during the "civilized" development of North America and the land belonging to the indigenous people became more and more controlled by treaties and the introduction of residential schools. At one time, Presbyterians operated 11 residential schools. This was later reduced to two and now all residential schools have been closed as the indigenous people and government are holding "Truth and Reconciliation" interactions. This activity was reflected by the size of the blanket being restricted and separated from other blankets on the floor and now as indigenous people are given more recognition, the size of the blankets are larger although still separated from other blankets. A delicious lunch was served by the St. Andrew's women and President Simmons conducted the business. Kay McCormick, June Elliott and Laura MacDonald were remembered in a memorial service using three pink roses. The new executive for 2017 was installed by Rev. Peggy Kinsman and Mary Simmons extended an invitation to the Spring Rally which will be held at Camp Kintail on May 15, 2017.
