The Citizen, 2017-01-26, Page 7THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2017. PAGE 7. Local giri earns silver medal in tournament PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 The weather, as always is a "hot" topic of conversation. The freezing rain on Tuesday certainly coated the ground and caused many problems for getting around, but it is improving. The warmer temperatures have gradually melted the sheets of ice that were covering many sidewalks and yards. The highways were fine for travelling by the end of week, just some fog to fight through, morning and night. The warmer weather has the animals wondering what's going on. The deer are out enjoying the winter wheat crop that has appeared from under the snow. Raccoons are out wandering around and some look pretty dopey. Our indoor -outdoor cats can't decide whether to be in or out in this very unpredictable weather. What we can predict is the Brussels ladies birthday group who gathered to celebrate the January birthday girls. Celebrating birthdays were Sandra Cable, Joan Bernard and Leona Armstrong. The group gathered Tuesday at JR's to enjoy a delicious dinner. Joining the birthday girls were Isabel Wheeler, Merle Cousins, Betty Campbell, Marie McCutcheon, Lois McCutcheon, Laura Barbour, Bev Palmer, Audrey Cardiff, Betty Cardiff, Jane Hall, Jean Davidson, Cora Alcock, Marci Bremner and others. Happy birthday to all. Some of the Smith family were travelling again last weekend. Shelley and Delayna travelled to Ottawa for a hockey tournament. They also took time to tour Carleton University. Skating on the canal finally had its opening day while they were there, so they enjoyed skating on the famous canal. Delayna enjoyed the school and the hockey tournament was a great success playing seven games, but losing in the finals to earn a silver medal. We send happy healing wishes to Betty McCutcheon who suffered a broken arm a few weeks ago. Mary Ann Bone has avoided surgery on her arm for the time being and we hope she is healing well. Nora Stephenson has her second new hip and is spending a few weeks recovering at Gilbert Hall Retirement home in Wingham. We hope time flies and she is back to Brussels and her home. We offer our condolences to Ross Procter and family on the passing of Mary Procter. She will be missed by children Cam, Louise, Don, Book Your Ad Now for the 2017 IPM Issue 35,000 copies in total Call The Citizen 519-523-4792 or contact sales representatives Brenda Nyveld e-mail ads@northhuron.on.ca or Shelley Kroes e-mail rvads@northhuron.on.ca Christopher and Anne and their families. Mary was a lovely lady who was known for her smiling personality during her many years of nursing and after. She loved to visit with friends, travel and attend social functions. Our sympathies to all. The Cranbrook Dart Club had 19 excited players out to master the boards. Only one team took the honours of winning five games and a repeat from last week which were Brad Speiran and Ern Lewington. High score was Gayle Speiran, 110 and George Zwep, 116. The lucky shot for the night was Rita Bowers. Our sympathies are extended to the Glanville family on the passing of Cathy Glanville. She will be missed by her husband Les and children Doris and Veronica and their families. Les and Cathy lived for many years on Sawmill Road, but had moved to the Lucknow area a few years ago. Cathy was a very quiet and talented lady and had made many lovely handmade crafts over the years. She will be missed by her family and the extended Glanville family, old neighbours and many friends. Our condolences to all. Our condolences to Alice Martin and family Gary and Wendy on the passing of Howard Martin. He will be missed by many and remembered as a quiet, hardworking dedicated farmer, faithful to his Lord and loving husband and father. Our sympathies are extended to the Martin family. We welcome Ed McClure back from a trip to Panama. He reports it was hot. He went four -wheeling to see the countryside and found that the area is really expanding. Panama City had a population of 800,000, but with the building of the new lock for the canal system over the last 10 years, the population has grown to over four million people. New areas for the city are very nice and show the prosperity of it. The new lock puts 40 ships a day through, 20 each way. An oil tanker pays $800,000 to go through. To go around South America, it is a 23 -day trip, depending on weather, so it is cheaper to use the canal system. Ed enjoyed the first-time experience in Panama but maybe it was a little too hot. Welcome home. Celebrating birthdays this past week were Marni Knight, Angela Fraser, Nadine Ringgenberg, Lauralei Shortreed, Kaitlin Ritchie, Hannah Dalton, Leona Armstrong, Brandon McGavin, Scott Bromley, Connie Alcock, Valerie Bachert, David Griffith and Kendal Carnohan Schlosser. Happy birthday to all. Very generous The closure and subsequent sale of Duff's United Church was a tough decision for the people of Walton, but in the aftermath, many community groups, including Cavan United Church in Winthrop, have benefitted from donations made from the sale of the church structures.
