Don't you just smile in wonder at
the way life moves and how each
day develops. We know that each
one is a gift and that no one knows
the future so really we should be
ready for all the surprises that life
has to offer.
Working Graber grandgirls have
put a cramp on the grandma time, so
it was with pure delight that when I
called on Saturday, expecting the
answering machine I was welcomed
by a fresh voice. So that call sent us
from puddling, as only retired
people know how to do, to having a
great lunch with the three Listowel
wonders. The ability to change plans
on a dime was our reward Thanks
girls.
You know by now that I keep
papers and see the winter as a time to
see and sort, notice the recycle is not
a given. So with a real sense of
accomplishment I have a recycle bin

At the Branch
Procter to be missed
By Jo -Ann McDonald
Last week was a much quieter
week around the Brussels Legion
Branch with the normal activities
happening. The Thursday night dart
league had 10 darters taking aim at
the boards.
Winners were: first, Gord Jacklin
and Sheron Stadelmann; second,
Deb Burch, Penny Reynolds and
Wayne Smith; high, Deb Burch, 124
and Roger McHardy, 104.
There were three teams of four
participating in Zone Euchre on
Saturday at the Belmore Community
Centre. Team one consisted of
Comrades Norm Dobson, Paul
Machan, Rick and Jo -Ann
McDonald; team two, Comrades
Eric Ross, Bob Richardson, Lloyd
Glanville and Ryan Shaw; team
three, Comrades Daisy Wong, Cam
Ross, Bush Whittard and Helen
Dobson. All three teams had a good

New members welcome
day of play but out of 18 games, won
nine, 10 and nine games
respectively, so they will not
advance to further play.
The foot care clinic was at the
Branch on Thursday last week. It
operates the third Thursday of the
month and for information about
appointments, call One Care.
We are sad to hear of the passing
of Comrade Mary Procter. Our
sympathies to her husband Ross and
children Cam, Louise, Don,
Christopher and Anne and their
families. She enjoyed many Friday
night suppers and supported the
Legion in many of the projects.
Her smile and no-nonsense approach
will be missed by many.
Our condolences to the Procter
family.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
held at the Branch had 14 tables of
by Branch
players at play. Winners were: first,
Susan and Carol, 79; second, Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 76;
third, Shirley and Dianne, 73; lone
hands, Lois and Cathy, six; low, May
and Lillian, 47. Sounds like it was
ladies' day at play, with all the ladies
winners. Glenn Bridge welcomed
Frank Workman as his helper.
The Sunday night dance had a
smaller crowd of 60 people enjoying
the first dance of 2017. Fog was the
deterrent I think The new band for
the evening was Crippled Duck and
they played great music. Dances are
every two weeks, weather
permitting.
Helpers included Mary Bradshaw,
back for a visit because of the better
weather of no snow, Judy Lee, Nanci
Ducharme, Sharon Robbins, Jo -Ann
McDonald and Dave and Karen
Hastings.

ready to go. If you hurry you can see
papers from the past, for me a
reminder that life moves on. I smiled
over birth announcements, wedding
pictures, events like the plowing
match near Wingham or the opening
of the pool or the hassels of village
council, the new Blyth theatre,
birthday and anniversary parties and
death announcements. There it was
life, in a capsule, in the Post, the
Advance Times and The Citizen,
items of interest, events that have
had an impact on my life. I am
teased often about the treasures I
keep, but they don't know the joy of
spending a January afternoon
reviewing life from some papers.
Howard Martin has died. In his
quiet way Howard was a good
influence in our community, doing
what needed done, using his gifts
and talents in positive ways. Several
times over the years Howard would
get a call from 5R's and in his
methodical manner would solve our
dilemma. Be sure to tell Alice your
Howard story, it might help just a
little. To Wendy and Gary, you had a
good dad. So thanks Howard for
being part of our lives.
Mary Procter has died, moving on
to the next place. Mary was a great
friend of my friend, Sheila Richards,
so our paths crossed at Blyth Festival
events, cottages, Christmas and tea
parties. We also connected as
registered nurses and people with a
history of Morris Township. So
Mary's direct manner and common
sense were a gift. Ross enjoy the
many good memories that your dear
lady left you.
So my sorted papers and Howard
and Mary's deaths have given me
lots to think about. All the sayings
about life are clear when you think
about the whole of it. So much nicer
to ponder than the words from the
new President of the United States.
Oh, yes we need more of Howard's
calm and Mary's common sense.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
