Facing adversity and changes, the
Beef Farmers of Ontario (BFO) are
home to celebrate New Year's Eve.
Their tradition, like many others of
that era, had the whole group on the
front porch at midnight belting out
"Auld Lang Syne". Mind you, they
were a family of singers so the result
was fun. There also were always a
number of whistles blown and
noisemakers played. The singing of
that song is another of the traditions
of welcoming the new year.
"Auld Lang Syne", sung to bid
farewell to the old year, is a poem
penned by Robert [Robbie] Burns
ees sharp

Producers heard last week at their
annual meeting.
Jack Chaffe, BFO Director, spoke
to the group at their annual meeting,
back in 1788 and set to a traditional and his Royal Canadians are credited
folk song, "Roud #6294". It quickly with "popularizing" the song

previous year, which dipped under
the organization's five-year average.
Those numbers can be attributed
to a number of different factors, he
said, including increased
competition from the U.S., the high
price of beef, making consumers
turn to chicken or pork, as well as
the high hay prices in recent years.
However, there are, he said, a
number of initiatives underway to
help bring those numbers up.
BFO President Matt Boman told
producers that one bright spot has
been the doubling of funds for the
feeder and breeder finance program,
which means $65 million will be
infused into the provincial beef
industry.
He also pointed to the continued
support of the risk management plan
in 2017, as well as a number of other
support programs that are already in
place.
In addition, there are plans for a
new federal research site in Elora.
The barn has yet to be built, but
should be in the near future.
Boman also discussed new
regulations regarding the
transportation of cattle, both within
the province and throughout the
country.
The new "time in transport"
regulations mean that a maximum of
48 hours in a truck will be reduced
to 36 hours between rest and water
for the animals.
Boman said that while producers

times? The answer calls for
remembering long-standing
friendships. In Scotland the singing
is a signal to join hands and form a
circle around the room. At the end of
the song everyone goes to the
middle, in the manner of a big hug.
This new year, the majority of us
will not notice any increase in postal
prices. The cost of regular lettermail
will remain the same throughout
2017. Parcel prices and other
incidental services will rise a little.
I realized this week through a
conversation that I have forgotten to
update villagers on some new
residents in our midst.
Michael and Andrea Neeb sold
their house, the former Murray Lyon
home, to Ken and Doreen Fraser.
The Neebs are still in the area,
around Kinburn. Ken Fraser is the
son of Charles and Margaret
Fraser of the village and
come to Londesborough from
Huron Park.
Lianne Hoogenboom of
Pianovations and Alicia Burton, who
works for Radford's Farm
Equipment, are now residents of
Blyth. Their house next to the manse
was purchased by Alicia's
grandmother, Jean McNamee. I trust
you will make these newcomers
welcome.
