Huron East committee structure makes waves
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
A lengthy debate over Huron East
Council's committee structure came
to a close last week when
concession was made over a
recreation committee appointment.
At Huron East's Jan. 10 meeting
in Seaforth, a number of members of
the Vanastra Recreation Centre
Committee spoke to council
regarding Mayor Bernie
MacLellan's decision to move
Councillor Ray Chartrand off of the
committee.
Chartrand had strongly opposed
the move, asking specifically that
he be left on the committee,
citing continuity and a "good
group" at the heart of the committee
that was moving in the right
direction.
Despite his empassioned plea,
MacLellan opted to remove
Chartrand from the committee,
replacing him with Councillor
Nathan Marshall from the Seaforth
Ward.
The decision angered Chartrand
and led to numerous heated debates,
not just between Chartrand and
MacLellan, but including other
councillors, who felt that if
Chartrand was so committed to the
committee, he should remain a
member.
MacLellan defended his
committee appointment decisions by
saying that sometimes members can
be part of a committee for too long
and an infusion of new blood is
necessary.
Those members of the committee
present at the meeting also spoke in
favour of keeping Chartrand on the
committee.
After some debate, Councillors
David Blaney and Bob Fisher
made a motion asking that
Chartrand remain on the committee,
which council passed.
The motion also contained a
clause that, as a result of the move,
Marshall would no longer be
replaced as a member of the Seaforth
and District Community Centre
Recreation Committee. He had been
slated to be replaced with Fisher.
Other committee structure
changes made that night included
replacing Councillors Alvin
McLellan and Brenda Dalton with
Councillors David Blaney and Kevin
Wilbee on the Administration
Committee, replacing Councillors
Dianne Diehl, Kevin Wilbee and
David Blaney with Councillors John
Lowe, Alvin McLellan and Ray
Chartrand on the Personnel
Committee, replacing Councillor
Kevin Wilbee with Councillor Ray
Chartrand on the Water and Sewer
Committee, replacing Councillor
Dianne Diehl with Councillor Alvin
McLellan on the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Recreation Committee,
replacing Councillor Larry McGrath
with Councillor Brenda Dalton on
the Seaforth and District
Community Centre Recreation
Committee, replacing Councillors
John Lowe and Alvin McLellan with
Councillors Kevin Wilbee and
Dianne Diehl on the Brussels
Medical -Dental Centre Committee
and replacing Councillor Alvin
McLellan with Councillor David
Blaney as council's representative
on the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority.
CKNX employees
win $1 million
Staff at the Wingham-based
Blackburn Radio CKNX station
received a slightly delayed
Christmas bonus last week when 27
employees won $1 million in the
lottery.
The individual winnings from
the Lotto Max draw that was
held on Friday, Jan. 6 works out
to $37,000 per employee.
The staff have run a lottery pool
for years, according to reports, with
each person contributing $2 a week
to tickets and small wins being used
to buy additional tickets.
