Locals welcome Brazilian exchange students Enjoying the snow Brazilians Guilherme Antonio Carvhalho, left, and Joao Paulo Silva enjoyed some outdoor winter activities recently. The duo are exchange students staying with local families and enjoyed their first experience with a Canadian winter including some of the extreme temperatures that have hit the area recently. (Denny Scott photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen Two local families are among several throughout the community providing a home for exchange students looking to experience everything Canada, including the frigid temperatures that have been sweeping through the area over the past couple months. The Vinnicombe home near Walton and the Pizzati home in Blyth welcomed Guilherme Antomo Carvalho, better known as Gui, from northern Brazil and Joao Paulo Silva from Pernambuco, Brazil, to their respective homes for the past several months and have been showing them what Canadian life is all about. The two Brazilians took a break from some fun in the snow recently to talk to The Citizen about what brought them to Canada, the major differences between their country and their host country and which experiences they're enjoying. Silva joined the program because he wanted to travel the globe, with Canada as his first stop. When asked if Canada, during the coldest months of the year, was what he expected, he said the winter took him by surprise. "It's usually raining in our winter," he said. "This is pretty different. It's 18°C degrees during our cold months, not -18°C" Carvalho is in Canada on a scholarship to learn English, as well as Canadian culture. He said that, while he didn't get to choose where he went, he has enjoyed being in Canada. Both Silva and Carvalho are in exchange programs that run until the end of January. Silva, a Grade 11 student at Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS), said Canada's education systems are very different to Brazil's. "We have more classes at home," he said. "We have 18 classes a year and we go to school 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day. Here we have four classes throughout the semester. It's a big difference." Carvalho, who is also at CHSS, said there is a network of students at the school who make the transition a little easier. "There are other exchange students at the school," he said. "There are 10 from Brazil, two from Spain and one from Italy, so there are chances for us to share similar experiences." Carvalho's take on Canadian education is that there is a lot more freedom in his classes. While he has a similar course load at home to Silva in Brazil, he said the number of courses isn't the biggest difference, but the amount of time given to complete work. He said that, in class, there is ample time for him to work independently on the projects and assignments he is given which isn't always necessarily the case at home. Coming to rural Ontario was also a bit of a shock to Silva, who said his home is closer to London in size and culture. While their first sledding and snowboarding experience coincided with their interview with The Citizen, it wasn't the duo's first winter experience in their exchange homes, as they had already enjoyed tubing, snowmobiling and a snowball fight. Both experienced a trip to Toronto recently, and while Silva said he enjoyed it, the trip was a high point for Carvalho who said he loved visiting such a big city that was full of life. The exchange students both said they have enjoyed their time here and look forward to other exchanges in the future. Wipeout Brazilian Joao Paulo Silva took to the slopes at the Blyth campground last week when he and his host family, the Pizzatis, braved the cold for some sledding. Silva is staying with the Pizzatis as part of a student exchange and will be heading home in January. (Denny Scott photo) AD CENTR EXTEND YOUR REACH - ADVERTISE PROVINCIALLY OR ACROSS THE COUNTRY!
