Church Cup prompts sportsmanship on ice: Clark
No rubber match needed
After an early 3-1 loss to Clinton in the sixth annual Church Cup at the Blyth and District
Community Centre on Jan. 4, the Blyth squad fought their way back to the finals to defend
their reigning title with a rematch against Clinton. Unfortunately for the home team, Clinton
managed to edge out Blyth 2-1 and dethrone the reigning champions. (Denny Scott photo)

put together a team of different ages
and sexes. The number one goal is
fun, the second is safety and the
third is having people of all ages
playing together. If those three
things are being met, then
everyone's already won"
After the invitations are sent, the
churches get back to organizers who
figure out a bracket for the number
of teams.
Douglas, at the tournament, said
she had already been told by several
people how great the event is
because it gives young players the
opportunity to play with friends and
relatives that, due to age groups, they
don't normally get the chance to take
to the ice with.

tournament is finding referees.
"We've been very fortunate to
have people that will volunteer,"
Clark said. "This year was the first
time we had a female referee. She
was younger and great and we hope
she comes back next year. We also
had, thanks to the number of people
volunteering, someone who
normally referees able to play with
his friends, and that was great"
Registration for each team is $50,
which covers insurance and booking
prices, and teams are asked to bring
something to share with the other
teams at meal times. Members of the
Blyth United Church help with hot
dogs and chili and the Sunday school
puts together treat bags.
Clark said that a similar event is
being planned for March but for
broomball instead of hockey. He also
said that the event won't be run for
teams or through churches, but open
to anyone who wants to come.
"We're looking for a $5 donation
to offset the insurance and the rental
and asking local churches to
contribute food for the kids to eat,
but we're going through the
broomball association to try and
invite players out to enjoy
themselves," Clark said. "It's after
their usual year-end finals, so it will
give players a chance to come out
and have some fun with players they
otherwise may not get to play with"

tournament, contact Clark at 226-

Both tournaments have been
brought to life as part of Douglas'
job as Huron -Perth Presbytery Youth
Minister.
"It's part of her job to make these
kinds of events happen," Clark said.
"The best ideas are the ones like the
hockey tournament that came from
Bryce"
Clark explained that any youth can
come to Douglas with any idea for a
group or a tournament to get some
help in bringing it to life.
"It can be for anything, soccer,
macrame, whatever they want,"
Clark said. "It's not a hands-off
situation. Kathy gets them to be a
part of the planning and that
increases the leadership that comes
from the youth as they help make
their dreams come true. She is
involved, but the plan and the event
is all theirs."
