Village saddened by
loss of Burkholder
Bookending it
As it was in the beginning, it shall be in the end, even in hockey tournaments. The sixth annual
Church Cup was hosted at the Blyth and District Community Centre on Jan. 4. The
tournament started with a ceremonial puck drop between Blyth and Clinton players Ryan
Gibson, left, and Bo Wharton, right. Blyth United Church Minister Gary Clark dropped the
puck. The teams would meet again in the final game of the tournament, below, which Clinton
won 2-1 (Denny Scott photos)
Council approves $30k HR plan
North Huron Township Council
decided it didn't want to wait for its
shared services partners to
modernize its human resource and
health and safety documentation and
went ahead without them.
During its Jan. 9 meeting, council
approved a nearly -$30,000 plan to
update the human resource and
health and safety systems including
$2,500 software to manage the
systems, which will require a $1,500
annual upgrade, and the hiring of a
post -secondary student for $25,000
for an eight-month term.
The software will help to make
sure the policies and procedures in
the human resource and health and
safety systems meet all mandated
documents.
Staff had already hired a student
contingent on the plan being
approved.
North Huron staff had been
holding off on the expenditure to see
if it could be handled through the
shared services agreement with
Morris-Turnberry to benefit both
municipalities, however the health
and safety documentation
was already being worked on
through the agreement and
has taken a significant amount
of time.
In her report to council, Chief
Administrative Officer Sharon
Chambers stated that bringing both
Morris-Turnberry and North
Huron's separate documents into
synchronization and meeting the
mandated necessities would be
extremely difficult.
Councillor Trevor Seip said he
was glad to be pursuing this option.
"I'm happy we're taking some
initiative to get our own house in
order," he said. "Our partners may
take advantage of this, but it's not
going to come at a free price. They
have to be a part of the discussion. I
like the avenue that we're not going
to wait any longer."
Chambers said that Huron County
staff had agreed to share their own
recently updated human resources
policy as a way of further bridging
the gap between what they have and
what they need.
Council passed a motion to have
Chambers begin the project, and,
according to her report, the post-
secondary student will immediately
begin his eight-month work period.
The Lord will Provide
In Green Pastures
by J.R. Miller, 1890
Write deep in your heart this New Year's day, this word of sublime
confidence, JEHOVAH-JIREH. It tells you that you can trust God
always; that no promise of his ever fails; that he does all things well; that
out of all seeming loss and destruction of human hopes — he brings
blessing. You have not passed this way before. There will be sorrows and
joys, failures and successes, this year, just as there were last year. You
cannot forecast individual experiences. You cannot see a step before your
feet. Yet Jehovah-Jireh calls you to enter the new year with calm trust. It
bids you put away all anxieties and forebodings — "The Lord will
provide."

The village was saddened this
weekend to hear of the death of
former resident George Burkholder.
Our sympathy is extended to his
family.
Happy birthday to Charlie Shaw
who celebrates Jan. 12; Grant
Sparling, Jan. 13 and Elizabeth
Phillips, Goderich, Jan. 18.
Winners of the Jan. 2 euchre were:
ladies' first, Mae Ritchie, 74;
second, Mary, 70; ladies' lone
hands, Marg, three; men's first, tied,
Gloria and Gord, 70 and men's lone
hands, Kay Hesselwood, four. The
next euchre party is Monday, Jan. 16
at 1 p.m. at the Legion Hall. Come
out and enjoy the fun and
fellowship. The new lift will be in
operation.
Many church services were
cancelled yesterday because Mother
Nature reminded us that it is still
January. There were times I could
not see the trees in front of our
house. Today is a better day for
digging out. Please be careful and
not overdo it with the shovelling.

Traffic petition to
be presented Feb. 4
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
While it was expected that North
Huron Councillor Bill Knott,
working not as a council member
but as a private citizen, would
present a petition regarding traffic
control at the intersection of County
Roads 4 and 25 to Huron County
Council during its Jan. 4 meeting,
Knott explained he wasn't able to
due to changed requirements for the
petition.
"Because county council decided,
after the fact, to change timing
requirements for the meeting, I was
refused the Jan. 4 date," he said.
"Instead of going to the committee
of the whole meeting, I decided to
attend the next council meeting on
Feb. 9."
Knott said he has requested to be
part of the meeting and should be
presenting his petition, which calls
for traffic lights to be installed at the
intersection, which has been the site
of several collisions over the past
year.
