Road to 2017 IPM begins with sign unveiling

The Waechter family of Brussels
was recognized at the MS Walk of
Kincardine for raising just over
$30,000 for the event in recent years.
Tim Waechter spoke at the event,
discussing the challenges his mother
Jacquie faces every day as someone
battling Multiple Sclerosis.
John Stewart, a long-time member
of the Blyth Lions Club, received the
second-highest honour a Lions
member can receive: the Presidential
Medal from Lions Clubs
International.
The road to the 2017 International
Plowing Match in Walton drew near
as a number of dignitaries and
volunteers officially revealed the
sign for the upcoming match at the
home of the event: Jack Ryan's
Walton -area farm.
A number of locals were honoured
with a number of the Huron Arts and
Heritage Network's Huron Cultural
Awards.
Brussels reggae artist Lyndon John
X received the Individual Artist
Award, while The Citizen Publisher
and Blyth Festival co-founder Keith
Roulston was honoured for his
community contributions.
Organizers of the Brussels Fall
Fair announced that they would be
introducing new Junior Ambassador
and Little Ambassador programs to
hopefully encourage participation in
the traditional Ambassador
competition.
Brussels proved to be an excellent
host for the annual Livestock Market
Association of Canada's convention
and auctioneering championship.
Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company
welcomed 1,005 ticket holders (the
census population of Blyth) to the
Blyth and District Community
Centre to be the first to taste its
Absent Landlord brew. The "first
batch" party was deemed a success
ahead of the beer's release to the
public.
Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn
announced he would be running for
the position of Huron County
Warden later in the year.

Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company
broke ground at its future site at the
southeast corner of Blyth and
London Roads.
The Alice Munro Festival of the
Short Story, held in multiple
locations across the community, was
deemed a success, with a reading by
renowned author Margaret Atwood
at Memorial Hall in Blyth.
Part II Bistro in Blyth and its chef
and owner Peter Gusso were
honoured by popular travel site
TripAdvisor when the restaurant was
ranked number one in several
categories in Ontario.
The name of the East Wawanosh
anniversary set for 2017 was
officially changed after backlash
from the name "Pow Wow", which
was linked to the township's 125th
anniversary in 1992 and to the very
naming of the township.
Local hockey enthusiast Brent
Scrimgeour announced that through
partnerships he had with the London
Knights, he would be bringing the
Ontario Hockey League club to
Clinton for an exhibition game
against the Erie Otters.
This event was building on the
momentum that began several years
earlier when Scrimgeour was
instrumental in bringing the Knights
to Blyth for a public practice and
autograph signing.
Grey Township's special 160th
anniversary celebration was hailed
as a success, thanks to perfect
weather and an extensive parade
through the community.
Chairs Alvin McLellan and
Dianne Diehl said that the event was
able to turn a profit, which would
then be dispersed to local projects.
Over 300 were in attendance for
the kick-off to the East Wawasnosh
150th anniversary, set to take place
in 2017.
Organizers of the event held an
official kick-off event at the
Belgrave Community Centre, which
featured a roast beef meal hosted by
the local Kinsmen and a silent
auction which raised over $13,000
for the anniversary.
The Walton Raceway struck a deal
with TSN to broadcast some of the
raceway's events on one of Canada's
largest sports television networks.
The deal was a big step for the
raceway, said Brett Lee, but an
important one.
Huron County Council made the
controversial decision to eliminate
the advanced -care paramedic (ACP)
program. The decision was made to
cancel the program immediately and
use only primary-care paramedics
(PCPs) rather than eliminate the
program through attrition.
Members of the Huron Pioneer
Thresher and Hobby Association
broke ground for their new memorial
building, which they hoped would be
up and running in time for their 2016
reunion in September.
The Blyth Legion was set to
celebrate its 70th anniversary. The
occasion would include an open
house at Blyth's Streetfest.
