Carroll's legacy marked with tree -planting A slender white oak was planted on the grounds of the historic Van Egmond House in memory of Paul Carroll recently. The Huron County Historical Society named Paul as its historian of the year and worked with the Van Egmond House Foundation to have a tree planted on the historical home site in Egmondville, south of Seaforth. A plaque will be installed at a later date. Pat Saundercock, representing the Van Egmond Foundation, spoke to the crowd about Paul's love of history and his leadership in saving this iconic piece of Huron County architecture from being demolished. The building is representative of a style of life in the Huron Tract during the 1830s. After refreshments and a tour of the historic landmark, Huron Historical Society members continued on with their speaker for the evening. Charlie Wilkins, author of Great Lengths A Celebration of the Surveyors of Ontario captivated his audience with stories of the early surveyors in both Ontario and all of Canada. he touched on their clever ideas and on their part in the European settlement of this country. This ended the spring speakers' series for the Huron Historical Society. A new slate of speakers and events are in the planning stages for the fall.
