Huron -Kinloss Cultural Roundtable
Taralyn Martin
About the Huron -Kinloss Cultural
Roundtable
Last year, the Township of Huron -Kin-
loss hired Cobalt Connects to assist them
in developing a Cultural Action Plan with
funding provided by the Ministry of Tour-
ism, Culture and Sport Many community
members and organization leaders were
involved in the cultural planning process
over the course of one year.
The final plan outlines the unique ele-
ments of the local culture in Huron -Kin-
loss, and steps to take to improve connec-
tions, develop local culture and to ensure
residents feel
they are living in a vibrant community.
Recommendations included: formation
of a Cultural Roundtable, developing a
Township -wide cultural investment fund,
creating a Cultural Hub or Centre, cele-
brating local icons, engaging youth and
developing an online communication
forum. For more recommendations and
details, see the Cultural Action Plan at
www.huronlcinloss.com.
This past spring, the Township was suc-
cessful in securing another grant from the
Ministry to continue cultural develop-
ment in Huron -Kinloss and implement
some of the actions listed in the Cultural
Action Plan. With the assistance of Cobalt
Connects, the Township has recently
established a Cultural Roundtable. The
intent of the group is to have regular dia-
logue between cultural groups and indi-
viduals in the community, and to develop
initiatives that can build the capacity of
the community.
At the first couple of meetings, the
group identified a number of common
issues ranging from funding to volunteer
recruitment, youth engagement to mar-
keting and branding. With the team from
Cobalt Connects assisting with the pro-
ject, the community has
access to a group with experience in all
of these areas. The intention is to create
some group opportunities (like a volun-
teer fair) and some time to address issues
being faced by specific groups. Cobalt will
be meeting with the full group as well as
doing private sessions with individuals or
groups to address specific needs over the
next 12 months.
If you belong to a Huron -Kinloss com-
munity organization or have an interest in
preserving the arts and culture in our
communities, please consider joining the
Cultural Roundtable. Presently we ask
members to participate in a monthly
meeting which is typically 2-3 hours.
From here we will determine the scale
and scope of projects so that
members can determine how involved
theywant to get.
We also ask that members act as com-
munity delegates - sharing the
information
they are learning and spreading it
throughout the community.
Meetings are held at different locations
across Huron -Kinloss. This project is
intended to benefit the entire Huron -Kin-
loss community and we want everyone to
have equal access to the project.
If you have questions about the Cultural
Plan or Cultural Roundtable, or would
like to attend the next meeting feel free
