Reeve of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Councillor for Ashfield Ward
Ben VanDiepenbeek
I am Ben VanDiepenbeek and I am seeking re-election as Reeve
of ACW. I was raised in Ashfield and married Mary Anne (nee
Redmond). I am father of Mark (Erin), Tom (Natalie), Ben Jr. (Kris-
tina) and Mike (Jacki) and a proud grandfather of 4. We all live
and farm in ACW.
I have been Reeve of Ashfield from 1977-2000 and Reeve of
ACW since 2000.1 have been a member of Huron County Coun-
cil since 1997, was Huron County Warden in 2002 and have sat
on all County Boards and Committees.
I was the founding and current Chair of Huron Clean Water
Review Program, current Chair of Lucknow Area Fire Board and
Lucknow and District Recreation Board and member of Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority and Great Lakes and St. Lawrence
Cities Initiative.
My platform is based on 4 Ls: Listening to you, Leaming from
others, Leaving for others and Leading Council. 1 will continue to
take the time to hear your issues, problems and needs. If you
have a better idea or there is a different way to achieve our goals
I want to know and will eagerly change for the better. I want to
make sure that we leave our children and future generations an
even better community than we enjoy today. When tough deci-
sions are necessary I will see that they are made, addressing the
needs of all, now and for the future, in a respectful way with all
of Council participating.
Shawn Drennan
My name is Shawn Drennan and 1 am running for the posi-
tion of Reeve for Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh.
[farm in ACW along with my wife, Trish, and our two adult
children, Bethany and Jeremy. 1 was born and raised in
the Ashfield Ward of ACW, attended Brookside Public
School and completed my high school education in Wing -
ham. 1 graduated from Ridgetown Agricultural College and
returned home to farm full time. I have a strong under-
standing of and deep affinity for the people and the land
in this township.
To stay informed on municipal matters, we have
attended almost all of the ACW council meetings over
the last four years. We have been astonished by the lack
of public input into the decision making process. We find
this trend to be very disturbing and one that needs to be
addressed.
Fiscal responsibility is key to a strong municipal future. Tax-
payers do not have endless financial resources and local
governments must respect that. First and foremost, munici-
pal services must be provided to protect the resident's prop-
erties. This makes fire and police protection, road mainte-
nance, protection of water resources, good drainage plans
and proper sewage disposal systems the top priorities. These
important items are the core mandate for a municipal gov-
ernment. Before all else, these must come first.
It's time for change. It would be an honour and a privilege
to become the next reeve of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.

Murray Curran
Hello. My name is Murray Curran and I am looking for your
support in getting re-elected to a second term as councillor
in the Ashfield Ward of ACW.
I live and farm in Ashfield ,were I was born and raised, with
my wife and four children. We are cash croppers who prac-
tice no till and minimum till farming. I also work at a local
marine and small engine repair shop.
As a man from this community I believe in and understand
the importance of the well being and safety of the resi-
dents, young and old, in ACW.
I would like to write about some issues that would make
me stand out from the other candidates but I clearly see
that we are all basically after the same changes and con-
sistencies.
So I ask for your vote so I can continue to serve you and the
township in the preservation of our great community for
present and future generations.

Roger Watt
I am seeking re-election as a Councillor in ACW's Ashfield
ward. I retired in 2007 after 39 years managing computing
and Internet technology and services, plus positions in
related provincial, national, and international organizations.
Local participation during my 22 years as a seasonal resi-
dent includes county steering committees, conservation
authority and drinking -water working groups, lakefront
associations, and Council.
Municipalities are created by the province to be responsible
and accountable local governments with respect to matters
within their jurisdiction. Being on Council is an experience
that brings both challenges and frustrations. Sometimes,
what seems best locally is at odds with provincial direc-
tives. Sometimes, there are major differences of opinion in
the community. Council must listen to all sides, and its
decisions must reflect the concerns of all members of the
community in a manner that is fair, impartial, and within the
limits of its authorities. That sometimes requires a middle-
of-the-road approach that doesn't always feel adequate.
The biggest on-going challenge is the cost of maintaining
and growing ACW's infrastructure. There are obligations to
provide roads, bridges, drinking -water systems, stormwa-
ter-management systems, fire and police protection, and
access to quality health-care facilities. These are critical
services, not options. The cost of doing everything in a
timely fashion exceeds the amount the Township can
expect to raise through property taxes. Council will have to
be very selective in establishing priorities. Communication,
consultation, and compromise are essential.
