Wawanosh 4-H Lifeskills Club
Maisy Jefferson
Meetings 3 & 4 of the Masterchef
Wawanosh club were held on Fri-
day May 9th at 5:30pm at the
Auburn Hall. Brent Alexander
opened the meeting with the
pledge. The leaders then, divided
the members into their cooking
groups in order to get the supper
dishes ready for the oven. For sup-
per, the members were preparing
Cabbage Roll Casserole, Spicy Mar-
inated Chicken Pieces, Fully
Loaded Muffins, and Shortcut
Soup. The groups were to wash
their hands, read the recipe and
report what each member was
going to do to a leader before they
began cooking. Once the recipes
were in the oven, members worked
in pairs to complete a healthy eat-
ing quiz.
Reba Jefferson led the
members in Roll Call which was,
"How are mealtimes different now
than when your parents ate
supper?" Following roll call,
Melissa Higgins read the Minutes
from the previous meeting. Mary
Ellen Foran then handed out the
title pages designed by Kate and
Loretta Higgins which members
are to colour and put in the front of
their books. Marita Oudshoorn
handed out packaged food items
and members completed a nutri-
tion label questionnaire. Members
then, took a break from their books
and played basketball outside.
Once the dishes were cooked,
members were called inside to
prepare the buffet table with
their dishes. Just before the
members enjoyed their dinner,
Cathy Drennan demonstrated the
proper way to set a table. While
eating, members discussed
proper table manners. Next,
members washed the dishes and
cleaned up in the kitchen. Meet-
ing 3 was concluded with the 4-H
Motto.
Meeting 4 was opened
with an introduction on the
importance of planning. Reba led
Roll Call which was 'Give an
example of when you had to plan
something: Next the members
took turns reading about meal
planning from their books. Mem-
bers then broke into groups and
were given the task of planning
meals for Christmas, a backyard
barbeque, a camping trip and a
birthday party. They were to
ensure that they were including 3
or 4 food groups and map out the
approximate cost of the meal. The
groups then presented their plans
to the group. Mary Ellen assigned
some 'homework' as members
are to complete the 'Supermarket
Savvy Quiz' and have it com-
pleted for the next meeting. Reba
then closed the meeting with the
Motto. The next meeting will be
held on Friday May 23rd at 7pm at
the Auburn Hall.
