REALIST PAINTINGS

It's not often that an
artist paints images of
herself into the sides of
a teapot, but Rose
Pearson does just that.
She places a highly
reflective silver vessel
against a background
and photographs the
result, then paints the
image in realistic
detail. If you look very
closely, the reflected
image of the artist,
camera in hand can be
seen. The public can
discover this fascinat-
ing work as the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery
presents a special exhi-
bition of paintings. It is
the first of three fea-
ture shows mounted
this season at the pop-
ular local gallery.
Rose works from a
studio which is nestled
in the woods in the
Haliburton Highlands.
She has formal educa-
tion in drawing and
painting, graduating
from York University,
with a Bachelor of Fine
Arts. She paints with
acrylics and oils and
also mentors other
painters and is also
employed by Fleming
College, teaching
courses for the Hali-
burton School of The
Arts.
In this exhibition,
titled "Vestiges and
Pauses", she is investi-
gating moments of
pause in the woods of
Haliburton County and
the farmlands of Peter-
borough County. Light
and space are key ele-
ments that are integral
to this body of work.
She is intrigued by
light and shadows and
reflections and her
work is both playful
and complex in its
attention to detail. Her
self-images are a
means of placing her-
self simultaneously
into the real and the
figurative worlds.
"Vestiges and Pauses"
is presented by the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery and
can be viewed in the
Bainton Gallery of the
Blyth Memorial Hall
from June 20 to July 12,
2014, Mondays to Satur-
days from 9 am. - 9 pm..
The exhibition is curated
by local artist Susan Hay
and sponsored by
Maarten Bokhout and
Helena McShane. The
public is invited to meet
the artist at the Opening
Reception on Friday,
June 20, at 6 pm.
