Flower Show Brightens Lucknow Horticultural Society Valerie Gillies Editor/Lucknow Sentinel Lucknow Horticultural Society held their annual Flower Show that included tea and cake at the Luc - know United Church on July 23, 2014. President Wendy Snow observed that the members like to show flowers and this event is much the same idea as a fall fair competi- tion. "It is a great opportu- nity for members to show off plants from their gar- dens. It is a great creative outlet and fun to look at what others have done." It is exciting when members show new varieties. Snow explains that not all of the flowers shown are from the member gardens. Some categories allow for the purchase of flowers which are then supple- mented with their own plants to create the full effect. Members heartily agreed that the scheduling of the show has the greatest impact on what they show. The actual season dictates which plants are ready at the proper stage at the proper time for exhibiting. The concensus was that it was very much "the luck of the draw". Members anx- iously scout their gardens about a week ahead to get an idea of what they will have to work with. Even one day can make a huge difference when waiting for a specific plant to bloom. Judging of the entries is done by qualified judges. However personal prefer- ence of the judges is fac- tored in, as well, and that can change the final outcome. Not all members have the space requirements for a full garden. To accommo- date this there are extra cat- egories where plants do not have to come from their own gardens. An example of this is the inclusion of container gardens. CONTINUED > PAGE 16 Many beautiful exhibits were on show at the annual Lucknow Horticultural Society Flower Show on July 23, 2014.
