Take the Dog Bites
out of Summer
Summer brings everyone outdoors. Unfor-
tunately, this can cause higher probability
of incidents occurring when various factions
meet. A hot issue in the area right now is dog
bites.
There are details given in the Huron -Kinloss
Council report in this edition concerning the
two main cases being addressed in Ripley and
Lucknow, therefore I will not repeat them in
this column. However, it was pointed out that
this is a very delicate issue that triggers high
emotions that draw out responses which can
have far-reaching effects on a lot of people
when allegations begin to fly.
Of course it is the dog owners' responsibility
to be in care and control of their pet. As
humans, it is not always possible to be perfect
at all times. Bad things happen. It is what takes
place after the incident that makes all of the
difference in the world. Responsible owners do
their part to remedy any issues to ensure that it
is safe for both their pet and others in the
future. However there are also irresponsible
owners who do not concern themselves with
those around them. They choose to ignore the
problem and treat all recommendations with
total disregard.
It is human nature to retain memories that
have great impact. Unfortunately, it is most often
the negative things that happen that remain the
strongest memories. Although this is human
nature, it does not follow that these remembered
instances should colour all future actions and
decisions. Truth and fact should prevail over
insinuation and emotion. In a perfect world this
would always be the case. In reality many grave
injustices take place when emotion is allowed to
rule behavior and responses.
As members of a larger community, it is also
a responsibility to educate ourselves. To this
purpose, Lary Lindsay of Dream Dogs Groom-
ing and Training in Lucknow has teamed up
with the Lucknow Public Library to offer train-
ing on dog bite prevention. As a reminder, the
"Be A Tree" program takes place at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 31 and "Safety with Dogs in the
Community" at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August
7 at the library. Register for these programs at
Lucknow Public Library 519-528-3011 or at
DreamDogs at 611 Campbell Street, Lucknow.
Learn what you can do to prevent a bad situa-
tion from becoming much worse.
Have fun at the fair
Lucknow Fall Fair Facts

Saturday afternoon at the fair is a
fun time! It's the perfect time to
socialize by visiting or participating
in games for individuals and teams.
There's entertainment inside the
arena if you want to sit and listen to
some oldies from the 40's, 50's and
60's provided by "Two of a Kind':
Youngsters, or those young at
heart, can meet Barry 0; a musician,
magician and ventriloquist. There
are two shows: 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
Don't forget the pedal tractor pull,
bale rolling, bale tossing, and arm
wrestling events.
The volunteers of the Lucknow
and District Fire Department will
once again be putting on an impres-
sive demonstration. Check it out
too.

;p Happy 100th Birthdays
By Ruth Dobrensky
Happy 100th birthday to Margaret
Mowbray who celebrates her big
day this Friday. Congratulations and
many happy returns Margaret.
Happy 50th wedding anniversary to
Margaret and Bruce Hamilton who
celebrated their big day last Saturday
with a come and go and family
dinner. We wish you many more
happy years together.
Congratulations once again to our
own Julie -Anne Staehli on another
great race by winning a second
place in a steeplechase. She will be
competing in British Columbia in
early August. You make us all proud
Julie -Anne.
Several members of the Luckow
Sepoy Ranees (pronounced
raw knees) travelled up to
Southampton last week for a days
outing. We stopped for coffee in
Paisly at Marty's, a great place
for a coffee or lunch, and then
proceeded to "The Market" for
a bit of shopping. We then had a
great lunch at the Elk and Finch
in Southampton and then spent
some time at the Amphitheature,
a beautiful spot currently
undergoing renovations which
should make it even more lovely.
We then spent some time at Fairy
Lake (behind the museum) in
Southampton where some of us
walked around the lake while
the rest of us watched the ducks,
turtles, and really huge carp
enjoying the lovely cool water and
being fed by the trained people. All
in all, it was a lovely day, hot, but
lovely.
On a personal note, that sprained
wrist of mine (yes, it's still bothering
me) isn't a sprain after all. After all
these weeks, I finally went and got
it x-rayed, and lo and behold it's a
fracture, but it is healing up in it's
own time.
Sympathies of the community to
