Wawanosh Wonder Women
Have Fun in the Kitchen
4-H Girls'
" Night Out
By Reba Jefferson
The third meeting of Wawanosh 4 -H's
girls' night out club was held on Friday,
July 11 at 6:45 at the Wingham Knights
of Columbus Hall. President, Kate Hig-
gins, opened the meeting with the
pledge then led roll call which asked
members what their favourite dessert
is. Members answered with a variety of
desserts - pie, Mississippi mud cake, ice
cream and more. The minutes from the
previous meeting were then read by
Amanda Morrison.
Leader, Mary Ellen Foran, then intro-
duced our host, Sue Doig, who is the
cook for the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Sue has had 30 years of experience as a
cook so the club had the opportunity to
learn a lot about cooking and event
hosting. Sue showed the club the ban-
quet area which was set up for a wed-
ding. Next, the members broke into
groups of three and got to work making
4 different cheese cakes: black forest
cheesecake, lemon cheesecake, berry
cheese cake and baked cheesecake.
While the cheese cakes were baking
or completed, Sue demonstrated how
she decorated 2 different kinds of
cake using whipping cream, choco-
late and butterscotch sauce to make
them look amazing. The club then got
to try the simple decorating tech-
nique and decorated a piece of cake
to enjoy. While eating their cake, the
club discussed possible names for the
club. Sue suggested the Wonder
Women and when put to a vote, this
name stuck. Kate then closed the
meeting with the 4-H grace. The next
meeting will be held on Friday, July 25
at 7pm at the North Huron Recreation
Fitness Centre.

Cathy Staehli
The Staehli family has just
returned from the Maritimes
where Julie- Anne, who had
qualified for Nationals in
Guelph, came in second. It was
an exciting 3000 m steeple chase
race in very hot conditions. With
3 laps to go, she forged towards
the front of the pack and fin-
ished strong to win a silver
medal in a time of 10:0017 min-
utes. She has qualified to com-
pete in the NACAC Champion-
ships in Kamloops, British
Columbia in August. (North
America, Central America, Car-
ibbean) Very exciting for All of
us, to say the least!
Julie -Anne headed out on June
26,2014 with 2 other athletes and
their 2 coaches and our family
met up with them in Moncton.
We spent 3 days with her, explor-
ing the Bay of Fundy, a fishing vil-
lage close to Shediac right by the
ocean, tasting the lobsters and
catch of the day! Her race was on
Saturday, June 28, and the next
morning they drove back to
Kingston. We went on to Nova
Scotia and Cape Breton.
For NACAC she is travelling with
Team Canada to Kamloops,
whereas I will fly to Kelowna to visit
with Joanne Mayer, a former Luc-
lcnow teachet Then we will head up
to see the Opening Ceremony on
August 8. Steeplechase is on Satur-
day, August 9 at 5:15 p.m.
Julie -Anne will fly home to
Toronto and spend a few days
here at home before heading
back to Kingston where she has
been working this summer.
